I disagree. Anime is worse because now people in Japan have an internalized idea of what an anime should be and throw as many tropes at things as to be "anime". Rather than just using it as a medium to replace shoddy live action and explore ideas.

Yeah anime is a great medium to explore ideas and do experimental stuff because it's so free form but on the other hand it's ridiculously expensive compared to live action, if I remember rightly one episode of TV anime is $300k, that's a pretty damn high budget for a non mainstream movie nowadays.

And I don't think they actively try to put tropes in, it's just what they're used to and it's nothing new to draw influence from stuff you enjoy.

Taking inspiration from things they like without self examination is leading to a lot of derivative crap that's part of that internalized idea.

I remember in it's height GITS: SAC was around that, it was pretty infamous for its high budget.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes was released as OVA's over ten years and was pretty good but I'm not sure the industry could sustain another project like that.
