not OP, nor have I read the manga, but I started watching the anime for the very first time just recently, and got some ~180 episodes in.

I'd say it works very well, and seems to pick up the pace (and balls) the further it gets. It's also very self-aware show, constantly throwing jabs at how the higher ups are complaining at the staff not being allowed to show or say this and that on TV. They also poke fun at just about every other major Shonen series, their tendencies to use fillers and recap episodes, and how they then end up doing technically the same, with its own twist.

But it's still kinda hit and miss. Gintoki's "I help, but act as retarded as possible" antics still aren't good and grow more annoying than anything.

Nichibros is great though, and Sakamoto was fine too.

As far as comedy in anime goes, Monogatari series has to be one of my top favorites.
Not even strictly a comedy show and yet it's leagues above almost all the other pure "comedy" shows when it comes to humor.
I could rewatch it a hundred times and the jokes still make me laugh.
Although the humor is a little bit more intelligent and clever than in Gintama or the other shows mentioned here.

If we're talking pure, mindless fun though, you should try Ben-to, NouCome, or the previously mentioned Nichibros.

Sorry op that's as good as it gets for now until something comes up and tries to top it. So it's gonna be a while. Just expand your tastes for now and look for something else like GTO or something.

Nichibros is one of the most painfully unfunny shows ever made. A perfect example of why japanese humor is generally awful.

Nichijou was really good too.
Although /a/ hates it now, they loved it when it was airing.
