What exactly do you want Genos to do, get a Stand or something?

Of course he's gonna focus on firepower, he was completely overpowered by the top of the Monster Association and no amount of "trickery" and gadgets would get him out of that, as just cyborg he's fairly limited to making gains in raw power, speed and firepower. Unique abilities are just always going to be an unknown factor that straightforward fighters have to deal with regardless of raw power (unless they're Saitama).

In other words, he should continue to train in a way that exercises his brain or body to a limit and continue from there.

No one has changed their mind about OPM at all, whether it was popular or not
but when it was still a manga, most other people simply ignored it and the fans hyped it up among themselves
then once it got popular while the anime aired, even more fans got on the track, but so also did haters and trolls noticed it.
Eventually the anime stopped and most people went on to the next thing, but the trolls and haters still remain usually, because once they tasted something they can't get it out of their head, thus they appear frequently among the previous shorter original fanbase making it seem like people hate it now.

This happens every.single.time a popular manga gets an anime that also becomes popular. Every Single Time
