What made DtB interesting were the characters as well as the society that has to deal with the new reality.
Subplots of human experimentation, ethics, and ultimately the importance of feelings add depth.
The gates themselves are fairly meaningless plot devices

Season 2 gave us most of the story, it's not their fault you have no reading comprehension.

There was a nice tug and pull with the audience, season 2 was just screaming and getting dissapointed.
