Kai is better if you just want the storytelling and no dragged-out padding bullshit. Z is better if you want all the crazy humor and silly puns that come with the filler scenes/episodes.

They both have their strengths and weaknesses.

A lot of people liked Faulcorner's music for DBZ better than kai (If you are watching dub). Z also has more silly moments. Kai on the other hand gets rid of all of the filler and has better dialogue.
