You can find public baths and hot springs literally everywhere in the countryside, and even still bathhouses are relatively easy to find in Tokyo, even minutes away from the major city centers. There are even a large number here in Shinjuku, since we have this gigantic gay district and nothing says gay sex like tens of 60 year old men looking to scrub each other's backs.

My girlfriend's father goes to one at least three times a week. A few friends (girls) would go at least once a week, since they sometimes only cost around $3 to enter. You couldn't pay me to try going into one though.

Don't bag on hot springs until you try them.

I recommend going to Japan during winter season so no tourists.

Go to Lake Kawaguchiko and stay at a 5 star hotel (we stayed at Lake Fuji Hotel).

The town will be dead except for the nearby Lawson. Barely any visitors. So you get the hot springs all to yourself. Best time ever.

The lake is nice to walk around for an hour and very nice sights. Saw a few hawks fly around and it was neat. Here is a photo I took of the lake.
