Is this show worth watching, or fujoshi fanservice like everyone says?
Which season is the best?

1st half of first season. Then watch book of circus then book of murder and then the movie of the titanic is coming out in spring next year.

Just read the manga. It's fujoshit fanservice all the way through but has good art and the characters are engaging.
If you're a fujo read the manga and watch the Books.
If you're anyone else, watch the first two seasons with your homo-vision turned off. Brilliant anime. A truly great exploration of the theme of power dynamics.

I'll begrudgingly agree. Anon, if you have to check out the series, read the manga. The fujo fanservice reputation is slightly exaggerated--there's a fair amount of T&A fanservice as well--but the story itself, as well as the protagonist, are total shit. Despite this, the character design is absolutely fantastic, and pretty much every side character is a delight in some way.
The anime isn't a total waste of time, though, if only because season one leads to season two, and Alois is one of the best things to come out of this awful franchise.
Read the manga, ignore the anime altogether (book of circus/murder are OK). Manga has fujobait art style but aside from a few jokes in the early chapters is honestly not fujoshit unless you're actually looking for excuses to ship.

>watch the first two seasons with your homo-vision turned off.
Anon, season two is rooted in canon homo, what are you talking about? Alois is explicitly gay as fuck.
>Brilliant anime. A truly great exploration of the theme of power dynamics.
I want to believe this is sarcasm.

Once again, only listen to these people if you really want to watch/read shitty fujo bullshit. Outside of the, effectively OC, first two seasons, Black Butler is very bad.

He's a victim of child abuse. His homosexuality is more complicated than that.
When I say homo-vision, I mean the perspective that results in trying to ship all the male characters.
First season was okay, mainly due to va and ost.
Second season is shit and has no relation to first one.
Wont touch manga with ten foot pole

>no relation to first one
Something tells me you didn't finish the second season.
>>146080633
Why are you quoting me as well? I'm straight up proclaiming the series to be shit.
>>146080678
I know it's complicated, but it's still there. I get what you're saying, though. His feelings aren't fujobait tier.
>>146080749
Right. I'm mostly just trying to say that, assuming the tension between characters is founded on lust destroys the most interesting parts of the narrative in the first two seasons.

I support you, anon.
What are you fags talking about? There's literally no gay innuendo at all in this manga.
Watch the whole thing from start to finish. It's terrible in every respect, but it's a fun experience. Nothing like picking apart all the bad things in this series.
Book of Circus is legit good though. It toned down the gay overtones by a mile for most of the season.
It's extremely gay, but the manga has nice art and costume design, and it's quite entertaining. I wouldn't bother unless you like cute boys or period aesthetics.
The manga is not that bad, actually a lot better than the anime. The art and the characters are pretty good, too. There isn't that much fujoshit stuff.
