This heroine's most important scene occurred in the middle of the story where she save the MC and does a self-confession, however returns to being mostly dropped with seldom appearance again to only show up in the end to get with the MC who eventually came around to accept her near the end of the story.

Now, what was the MC doing for the majority of the time? Spending it with another girl whom he as a crush on. The time he spend with this girl were meaningful, adorable, and entertaining. There's also tears, blood, bonding, the whole nine yards between them to show development. And she too have her scene of saving the MC before the designated love interest had hers. But as it turns out the girl MC has a crush on has romantic feelings for someone else.

With the above, it's not difficult to imagine people watching this rom-com would be rooting for the girl MC has a crush on even if she won't win.

Yesterday an anon mentioned that Kishimoto mentioned in an interview that he did indeed have plans to hook up Sakura with Naruto and even added plot hooks for it, but then decided to switch to NaruHina and SasuSaku, because he feared people would see Sakura as a "horrible person" if she didn't stay with Sasuke. Which is somewhat ironic, because the way he ultimately wrote her, turned out to be a bigger character assassination than any discomfort from her switching the guy she likes could have caused.

I can only imagine that the "horrible person" comment meant that he or his editor thought that the landwhale backlash would be too big if he didn't have her stay obsessed with Sasuke, instead of switching to a guy she trusted, survived hardships with and interacted with on a daily basis.

In other interviews Kishimoto stated that he decided on NaruHina in the middle of the story, and we know editors and Hinata camp pestered him to ship them. He caved to the pestering, much to his wife's disdain since she loved Sakura and wanted her to end up together with Naruto. And that there was original plan. Naruto was in love with Sakura and Sakura herself went back and forth between Naruto and Sasuke. So pretty much the shipping for both camps is legit and was supported by the author himself.
