Mainly because the club was just a place to hang out and do nothing, they really never were "friends" or really care to learn how to, even when that was the point of the club, then time passes and things are forced to go down and the characters decide to move on. Well, it doesn't actually matters, the whole setting is there waiting for development, Sena situation is very clear through the same anime. She herself mentions that the reason she participates and put effort in the athletic events are due to her misconception of how to make friends, she's basically a child, and a very spoiled one. And i'm not sure how to prove to you that being "good at studies" is not the same as being smart.
