Due to a syntax error, I missed five episodes and didn't really notice until I thought: Shouldn't this show be longer?

I decided not to go back, because if the episodes are that irrelevant, it's just not worth it.

Outside of part of the nazi sub, the twins, a bit of japan and most of the ova it never really hits "edgy" status. Its just a stylistic action anime with some decent theme and substance here and there.

TTGL is an example of an action/comedy anime done well.

Compare Kamina to Revy.
They're both established to be 'badasses', but in the case of Kamina the viewer learns this naturally and in a much less hamfisted way, which makes him seem like a much more likeable character.
He's character first, badass second.

On the contrary, the beginning of Black Lagoon is a constant barrage of Revy's adult language, smoking, antics and incredible feats to constantly remind the viewer of how tough, cool and incredible she is.

It's quite the opposite, Revy is a lot more interesting and well round rounded character on top of that being a shown as a lot less "badass" than Kamina. Kamina was a rather one note character in general, TTGL had lots of great stuff going for it but well rounded characters aren't one of those. I'm saying this despite liking TTGL over all a lot more than Black Lagoon. Revy actually is shown to be pretty unstable and you can see her attitude is a form of escapism. Rock even proves it to her himself. Hell, there's a whole episode dedicated to that.
