I'm only in the second chapter of the novel but going by the quick peek I took at volume 2, it could be gayer.
When they get home after Takumi was attacked (translation) Gou whispered ‘it’s going to be okay’ over and over again as if it were some sort of mantra. Takumi took a deep breath as he was told. His body swelled as air entered his lungs and his trembling started to lessen. His body felt heavy from how exhausted he was, though. The most comfortable thing to do right now would be to fall asleep propped up by Gou’s arms. As the thought crossed his mind, his body moved up. His face felt hot from having someone witness such a shameful display.
I think when Takumi said "don't tell anyone about that" he meant this.

Yeah, they skipped some things, although I'm not sure which scenes are canon and not until I read more of the novel. Incidentally, the manga also skipped a lot of stuff in the first two chapters (Harada family background and monologues). In the novel you understand their family dynamic better right from the beginning. How Takumi is a lot like his mother, for example.

Pic unrelated, it's manga Kaionji talking with Takumi on the phone. I'm sad they skipped that one and only moment Kaionji almost lost his cool and kicked a bunch of dirt to the principal.
