That's only the case when their age matters. If the author hadn't wanted any romantic tension between Kotori and Sensei, she'd have made him 5 to 10 years older. A 36 year old new father and teacher is just as believable as a 26 year old one.

But she didn't, so clearly she wants something to happen between the two as 9 years age gap isn't uncommon.
