Remember how they were in elementary when the 2 main characters met, and they wanted to go to the same school together. Now they're in high school apart, and the boy still has feelings. Final arc should've been more closure rather than depression.

I have watched 5cm twice and always wondered why that second arc was there. First I thought it was pointless but I thought more about it and maybe there is a reason why it's there after all. Of course this is all theory but I feel that maybe 5cm goes against the ideas the protagonist has. Maybe it's all about not suffering over an old romance and accepting the changes in lifestyle and the people around you if you take into account the way the second girl tried to develop a relationship with MC but he was always stuck thinking about something else. Also, at the end the first girl fondly remembers her time with MC but merely sees it as a nice memory from which she already has moved on from (also shown by a date she has with some other guy if I remember right). Meanwhile MC took it all the wrong way and now suffers into adulthood because of stupid reasons. Everybody's moved on and did something with their life but he attached too much importance to something. The second arc was there to show the problems he faced with all the other relationships he had because of this.

The second arc isn't pointless. It showcases that even though the guy (primarily) is stuck in the past he's not proactively trying to change his situation - he just waits forever to receive a message from her.

Part 2 is the turning point, where you know from his actions that the story is heading toward a "bad" end. He doesn't see new opportunities in front of him (surfer girl), he doesn't exert himself to recover and restore past bonds, he just waits while time passes him by.

If he'd have done anything differently in part 2, it would have very easily flowed into a positive/good end in part 3. That's why it's a necessary part of the story.

Not that anon but second arc was more focused on framing how hopelessly distant the male MC was by having 2nd girl MC falling for him while he's still obsessing over his old failings. By comparison, the 2nd girl MC was shown to move on from her crush over male MC which is meant to show how male MC still hasn't moved on from his shit.

Arguably the only reason why it might seem confusing is because 2nd arc was done from 2nd girl MC's perspective when she was more of a support role that's meant to prop up the male MC.

That said, I still think the third arc was terribly executed and basically left me cold while the ending itself only barely salvages it.
