NGE marks the beginning of late 90s. There may be some overlap, with early 90s perhaps reaching into 96 or so for some anime, but early 90s is marked by economic crisis in Japan and a strong decline in anime industry. Then anime was saved in 1995 by Evangelion, which marked the beginning of the late 90s. I guess it's true that NGE wasn't influenced by Evangelion, so in some ways we can probably include it in early 90s.

2008-2007 were the last years we could get shit like Kaiba, Shigurui, TTGL, Dennou Coil, Mouryou no Hakou, Mitchiko to Hatchin, Tetsuam Birdy, Casshern, Mononoke and Redline have budgets.

There are few exceptions that confirm the rule, like stuff made by studios and artists who haven't prostituted themselves yet : Bones' Space Dandy, TMS' Lupin, Yuasa, who is still impressive even if it's just under-budgeted adaptations, etc...

I used to think 2007 was the cutoff point and I still believe that to some extent, but I feel like since 2014/2015 things are starting to pick up again. Nowhere near 2007 levels of quality, but getting good - I'm enjoying more per season than I did 2010-2013 which felt so shit, only a few gems I enjoyed kept me going through that period.

2007 is such a great year, I wasn't really watching anime at the time but whenever I hit my backlog I can bet that the series I like the most came out in 2007. 2000-2006 is pretty good too but 2007 feels like the standout year.

I didn't get to experience it? I don't know, apart from Pokemon all the stuff 90s kids obsess over seem to be too old for me to remember. My older sisters had some of that stuff but not me.

I was very sheltered as a child and my family tried to get me to do 'boyish' things to make me more mature so I could hang out with the other kids but it didn't happen, I was never really into that stuff. I think at school they wanted me to be in the special needs group but kinda realized there was nothing wrong with me and in fact I was very smart.

I guess I don't see it as a problem, nobody sees me as 25, I don't feel 25. Many of my friends in my cosplay community are anywhere between 14 and 18 and they don't see me any differently, they actually treat me like the young one and they know my age but I have the added bonus of constant money and going to Japan when I feel like it.

Late twenties to early thirties is pretty much the perfect age to have been completely fucked by the recession straight out of college. There's a lot of people in that age group who are underemployed or who dropped out of the labor force. In the US often saddled with student loan debt on top of everything else. And while long enough has gone by that the more functional of those people will have recovered somewhat, people in that particular age group in many areas basically got a late start into the careers.

And there are many different levels of dead, and I don't think it should be a requirement that it's literally true. I will agree, though, that saying anime is dead now would be a great exaggeration, and that stangnant would be a better word.

But we can imagine different levels of dead, that is not actually true:
- anime for non-children dead
- anime for non-toddlers dead
- professional anime dead
- anime literally dead
I think all cases would be acceptable to use the term dead, if understood from context. And if we get one non-toddler anime every three years, I'd still think it'd be acceptable to say that anime was dead.
