Hasn't really held true. In Synchro arc, only Sora, Tsukikage, Reira, and Yuya fought Obelisk Force.

Reira's established as a mini Reiji and therefore it makes sense that he'd win, Yuya already OTK'd three of them before, Sora was formerly in charge of them and therefore stronger, and Tsukikage was getting BTFO.
Additionally, when they appeared again they rocked Shun and would've carded Yuya if not for Kaito.

The rest you said holds true aside from the Yuya becoming a super hero thing.
His only accomplishment all arc was basically held up by Jack, the city's established hero, helping to improve him, and he only really shone through during the Jack/Yuya duel at the end thanks to Jack himself providing some last minute mentoring.

This is a late reply, but I am absolutely, completely terrified about Gon. When he was introduced as THE MAN, GONGENZAKA, he was a character after my own heart, a noble bara who protects his weak, frilly friend with stalwart masculinity and strength. He's a duelist who doesn't use Action Cards, which almost everyone is critical of as we get deeper and deeper into the hell of Punished Arc-V. He relies solely on his own skills, and without Spells, Traps, or an Extra Deck TIED WITH SYNCHRO SPAM, against an X-Saber deck that had perfect draws.

He was presented as following a code of honor, a representative of the Benkei legend -- even his first duel in the series against Yuya has him fighting on a bridge and losing against the guy he would fight to the death for, just like Benkei! He's karate-chopped monsters, used his own strength to stand against monster attacks, and even used meditation to attack an opponent WHILE BLINDING HIMSELF.

He was given Pendulum Monsters, earned himself a new Synchro Monster, and when he had his back against the wall he refused to break his philosophy for convenience and turned down an Action Card against Crow! And then...

And then he lost.

And yet there was nothing horrible down in the garbage pits. No one was being abused unless you were a high-class citizen or trying to fight your way out. He lost to Crow... For what? And then after that, he keeps losing. When it comes time for him to fight Obelisk Force on screen, I fear it will be a sudden loss... If it's on screen at all.

The Benkei legend says that Benkei fought off an entire army by himself so his master could commit honorable ritual suicide undisturbed, that he died on his feet, hundreds of arrows in his front, not falling over until someone pushed his corpse.

One of the stranger things on his resume (according to ann) is that despite being primarily a writer, he had a brief stint as a key animator in the mid 2000s. Seems like he's not averse to branching out, if only that would show up more in his writing.

He wrote for Zexal which saved the franchise so pretty sure NAS will keep him on board. He's also very loyal having been writing for YGO as early as DM DOMA arc. Zexal was just the first time he was doing a monthly manga and a weekly anime so I don't blame the guy for not wanting to write for Arc-V. But now that he's had plenty of rest he'll probably be back to tackle the next anime series. Kuwabara is probably getting his dick sucked for how successful DSOD was so they've already got him as the next director.
