Kubo had plenty of ways to resolve that fight with stuff that was already in the series, but he just couldn't help but use yet another asspull to finish it off.

So after re-reading the manga, I think it's pretty clear Kubo would heavily prefer a IchiHime endgame.

I think the issue is that the first 250 chapters featured Rukia as the primary heroine of the manga, and a lot was made regarding their relationship by a lot of people. Orihime's jealousy, the classgirls asking if Rukia and Ichigo were a couple, Rukia's Kaien flashback, it's not a surprise that IchiRuki took off.

The anime built on top of that and took off with it. SP pushed the shit out of IchiRuki, so the fanbase grew substantially in their favor.

And then Kubo reversed hard in the other direction. Rukia went from being the primary heroine to being a background character. Orihime's feelings for Ichigo gained more substance. But by that point the damage had been done, and Orihime's popularity in polls lagged significantly behind Rukia.

I think it'll end IchiHime, but Kubo fucked up. Probably knows he did too. I think if he could do it over, he never would've introduced Orihime into the story at all, or at least would've wiped out her feelings for Ichigo. But it's too late, the end is nigh, and I think he's gonna pussy out and leave the ending open-ended to avoid pissing off the majority of his fanbase.

There was also "Why Me Sad", but that showed how one-sided her feelings still are. She was crying for Ichigo after he had already regained his powers and determination, and she had no idea what was going on.

If Orihime's feelings were important, they would have been addressed and Ichigo would have been made properly aware of them in their fight against Yhwach. Instead, she acted as capable backup as she had always wanted. That's the end of her character arc with Ichigo.

Alright, keep all the Hueco Mundo stuff mostly the same, only Aizen doesn't KEIKAKU his way out of getting tag teamed by the captains, and actually has a hard time dealing with them, since Gin reveals he's double crossing Aizen when it actually matters, and he dispels the sword effects so people can actually do something. Also the Arrancar are less garbage and pose more of a threat so they don't just job.

Have Aizen only sort of win by using the hougyouku to deus ex machina himself a powerup, and then Ichigo has to fight him along with whoever's left, only winning because his hollow cranks his power level up to 11 and Ichigo is able to barely get a win over Aizen, but he gets his ass kicked so hard his powers are totally depleted, and they figure that it would take a lifetime to restore since he used so much, so he still loses them.

Next arc is basically the same, but shitcan the Fullbringers for something less stupid like investigating mysterious disappearances with Urahara, that winds up being Demons to build up to the final Hell arc, and then Ichigo gets his powers back the same-ish way and kills whatever the demon is with the help of Rukia.

Hell arc is the finale and is about Lucifer and his high demons coming to eat the soul king and take over the throne of the spirit world after being cast down a gorillion years ago.

Rukia wins.

-Finally got to fight alongside and protect him. Kubo even shows us panels from each arc to show us how long she's been waiting + drew that little omake of her. He remembered the promise she made back before the SS arc officially started.

He hasn't taken her love for him as a joke at all. If anything, it's one of the few consistent things in the entire manga.

Her goal was never to make him hers, but neither was sakura or hinatas and they still got their happy ending. Hinata wanted to stand on the same battlefield next to hime, while Sakura wanted to save Sasuke and ease him of his pain.
