The manga is better. It ran longer compared, but not as long as Inuyasha, since it got better treatment due to funding and popularity of her work.

The anime filler in later seasons really annoys me sometimes. It's like the writers outright disliked the later manga chapters and didn't want to adapt them. Basically adapting them while annoyed only to ignore them afterwards.

Characters introduced in later chapters rarely appeared in filler and the new techniques, like Hiryu Shotenha or Moko Takabisha were NEVER used in filler episodes (only the movies). It gets even dumber when there are filler episodes all about proving how some big ki blast-type attacks of random filler characters are just tricks somehow.

I discovered them in 1990, from Korean dubbed (they weren't bad) VHS rentals in Los Angeles. Going to college and finding and discussing anime with other enthusiasts, Ranma 1/2 was by FAR the most popular anime up for discussion.

Honestly Kasumi is objectively the best Ranma waifu. She's kind, sweet, devoted, beautiful, a great cook, and doesn't have any of the glaring personality flaws the other girls have (like being jealous, aggressive, or moody). Nah, I doubt it. Her style is still pretty recognizable in Rinne. There isn't any art revamp or modernization that would suggest a ghost artist taking over her drawings. Just compare the Rinne anime art to the manga's. The manga seems like some unpublished work from the 90s.

The male MCs of her major series are all some stereotype of a bad boyfriend, for that matter: Ataru is a cheater, Yuusaku Godai is a weak, indecisive loser, Ranma is an overly macho jerk, Inuyasha is hung up on his ex, and Rinne is broke.

Also, fathers in her series are mostly either awful or absent, and mothers are also often absent, so she might have family issues, too.

I think Rinne's main issue is the basic premise. There isn't really any overall goal for the main character, aside from not dying from starvation, and the shinigami gimmick is pretty generic, compared to Lum's engagement (which is generic now but was unique at the time) or Ranma's jusenkyo.

However, the cast overall although similar in some ways, avoids many of the trappings of Rumiko's past works. And the main girl isn't a violent tsundere.

Ranma wasn't story focused, but giving him a goal gives the show a stronger set up, I think that's Rinne's main flaw.

I don't think the random situations are really any worse than before. Some of them are weak, but I don't think they're any more inane than some of the random one shot stuff in Ranma and UY.

Ukyo was literally the healthiest and best relationship for Ranma. All other choices are factually wrong.

Ukyo is loving and caring but obviously doesn't take it 0-100 real fucking quick. Meanwhile, Shampoo, Akane and Kodachi(lol) are literally fucking insane. There have been so many instances where Ukyos been about to be caught up in some fiance bullshit and says 'fuck it' because she realizes it isn't worth her time and focuses on getting closer to Ranma instead.

Sure, she loves and obsesses over Ranma just like any of the other girls do. But it's different with Ukyo, at least if they got married the other girls would still be allowed to exist and fucking interact with Ranma.
