>it has been a few years since I went to America.
That would be
>アメリカは数年間行っていない
or
>アメリカから戻ってから数年間が経っている
or something similar.

In Japanese, times take に or no particle at all when they're used as adverbs, to describe when an action takes place or for how long.

数年前から is still valid in other contexts, though. For example 数年前からの手紙, a letter from a few years ago.

If I learn to read and speak Japanese from computer resources (anki, Tae Kim, VN's, manga), how am I eventually going to be able to write in Japanese?

Should I learn to read/listen/speak in Japanese first and then go back and learn stroke order for every kanji/kana, or should I somehow try to learn it side-by-side?
>>
>>145640091
It's really hard to learn japanese without accidentally learning how to write the kana.

For kanji, you can do a crash course for a week when you're fluent, and spend a hell of a lot less time on it than if you learned writing on the way there, because you're way less misguided.

To the Anki haters...

You. Yes, you. The one screaming, "It's a waste of time!" and DJT lied to you!" and other slurs I dare not mention.

Tread lightly.

You are one. We are hundreds, thousands. Millions. You aren't just IN the minority; you ARE the minority. I don't feel awkward or anxious using Anki around others, and your words don't affect me. Many others, however, are coming out of their shells for the first time in their lives. This is the first time many are enjoying the beautiful world of studying Japanese language which has been made easy for them - and it IS beautiful. Incredibly so. DON'T ruin this for them. Anki fans may have their differences, they we will not hesitate to come to the aid of their fellow learners, especially against someone who so virulently slurs that which has brought us all together.

Don't take this the wrong way. I don't hate you. I don't fear you.

I pity you.

I'm sorry that you feel this way towards us. I'm sorry that Anki is such a bane to your existence. And I'm sorry that you are missing out on such a wonderful learning too. Mostly, though, I'm sorry that you feel the need to go around and publicly chastise and berate others. I'm sorry that, to ensure your own validity, you need to make others feel invalid. I'm sorry that your self-worth is so infinitesimally miniscule that you have to make others feel less-than-human, at least in your own denatured mind, just to feel whole. I am truly sorry that day-in and day-out you have to put up with your worthless, meaningless, Shakespearean tragedy of a life.

I ask you politely to cease your unnecessary cries for attention, and instead invite you to join our ranks. Uninstall your childish anime porn games, start up Anki and breathe in the splendour and the amazement of your first batch of cards, and then, maybe, just maybe, you'll see what you've been so hopelessly searching for this whole time.

>without accidentally learning how to write the kana

What did you mean by this?
>>
>>145640651
Even if you don't try, the time and exposure it takes to learn japanese means that there's an unreasonably good chance you'll end up learning how to write the kana and a few simple kanji. Just because.
>>
>>145640651
He's full of shit. Don't worry, you won't learn how to write even the kana no matter how good you're at reading.
>>
>>145640735

That's true, but it'd be pretty statistically impossible to correctly learn the stroke order for every kana just by reading. After being able to read proficiently, I'm sure I'll be able to remember each kana and draw it, but not with correct stroke order.

And then kanji, that's a different story. You mentioned it'd take a week to learn stroke order for most kanji? I was thinking more like an entire year with pretty serious studying after I become proficient in the language
>>
Will I have problems if I learn kanji only in writing but not in speech? Only need it for reading right now but I'd want to learn to speak and write some day.

I don't mean with perfect stroke order, but I do mean sensibly. For example, I still write あ with the first stroke last. That's an incorrect order, but it's still sensible. The same is true of all the other devious stroke orders I picked up.

You'd have to intentionally learn incorrect stroke orders, or willfully ignore the whims of your stationery, in order to learn totally insensibly stroke orders for the kana. You'd have to be very unlucky, or try really hard, to not notice or hear the overarching general approximate guidelines there are to stroke order, for basic kanji, too. It just takes too long to acquire the language, with too much exposure to the community at large. That's why a week crash course would work.

My memorization is really, really bad, having to remember 20 or even 10 cards a day is too much. I always do it at the end of the day too, so I feel like shit as I go to sleep when I see the ~50% success rate. Do drills, write the same character over and over again, like a couple hundred times. But without somebody to give feedback on your stroke order and penmanship you will not advance that fast. Taking a community college course is a good way to learn very solid basics like writing, the first part of any Japanese college course is teaching you the kana and how to write them. Absolutely not worth taking a course if it's not taught by a native though.

I'm doing RTK and so far it's been working pretty well but I'm wondering if it's a good idea to keep up the Anki practice of showing the keyword, and thinking of what the kanji looks like in my head. I don't really think visually, so I have a hard time seeing the actual kanji in my head and I usually think of each kanji as a set of radicals and have a hard time remembering their position relative to one another. The book says I shouldn't use the Kanji as the front side of the card but never really explains why. Would I be getting more out of this If I switched to the Kanji at the front? I'm not really planning on writing anyways as my handwriting is terrible.

You do keyword > kanji because the book is to learn how to write. If you want to learn to read you don't need to memorize radicals, in fact its a waste of time because you'll forget it all anyway. That's why Japanese people have no trouble reading or typing, but suck at writing. You just learn by recognition, that's all you need. RTK for recognition is just a wasted 3 months of memorizing shit you'll forget for no advantage.

>>

Learning styles is just a meme from the 90s to make people feel better about being retarded. All people learn the same way.
>>
>>145649632
There's no such thing as "visual learner". That's a meme made up by teachers to force their supervisors to stop shoving rote memorization down their students' throats.

Autism spectrum disorders are substantially more common on imageboards than other places. People with ASDs usually have defective memories, with defects in random places and savantlike abilities in others. Not all ASDs make you look retarded or awkward, and they usually go undiagnosed.
>>
>>145640091
>how am I eventually going to be able to write in Japanese?
Try practising for a start. Using a computer doesn't mean you aren't allowed to use a pen and pad of paper.

There are some really good kanji decks in the COR that you can use for specific kanji production practice. It would teach you how to write in the sense of writing like I am typing right now, if I were instead using pen and paper, but it will drastically help you be able to learn and retain the ability to physically produce the script/characters which make up the language.

It doesn't. That's why he asked.

When you ask for help, people will ask you further questions in order to get more information on your situation. People have fragmented understandings of a wide variety of topics, and might not have the right information to give you help with only the information you gave in your original post.

Read what I said here: >>145649626

RTK is for production, not recognition. Reading is recognition. Typing is recognition (you don't write the strokes). RTK is not for recognition. You don't need to memorize radicals for recognition. Just download a vocab deck if you don't care about writing, kanji > meaning/reading. It's easier than it sounds, most people end up doing this one way or another because it's the best way.

Okay well if you don't have autism then all you can do is power through it or do something else

If you were autistic you could probably invent a ritual to force your brain to make a different type of information out of the arrangement of the radicals, but only autists are used to abusing their memory like that (they need to be able to do it to function at a high level despite their deficits)

Layers of information formed by visually learning the entire process of manufacturing, shipping, transport, mechanical, and IT, used in selling a given product wether online or in person.

So far I've found RTK way more effective for me then just grinding core2k. The stories help solidify a kanji in memory for me, and when I do forget one, remembering the stories is a backup. I almost quit learning japanese just doing core2k, but RTK has been refreshing with the exception of the visual element.

What defines neurotypical then? Just because I don't recall images clearly means I have a disorder? According to the Wikipedia article I also have Dysgraphia because I have shitty handwriting ,and have a disorder related to Spatial Orientation because I get lost easily. Or maybe instead I am just different from other people because literally everyone is different from other people and not everyone thinks the same way.

That's literally not what dysgraphia means.
>Or maybe instead I am just different from other people
When you're sufficiently different that you can't function properly, that's literally disorder. No, I'm not saying *you* are disordered. But please understand what disorder is. This behavior is unacceptable.

If only blind people existed they would have a different method of storing speech than writing.

The fact that present writing is highly optimized for vision is irrelevant.

That sounds like the dumbest thing ever since it would be better to just watch anime and rip the audio to your phone to listen to over and over.

>>
>>145652929
Anki is skill building, skill building is a crutch to make acquisition easier. AJATT works but it's more efficient to use your native language to get your foot through the door.

There are alternatives to anki for skill building but it's probably the most efficient way to do it for things that aren't grammar.

The DoJG site posted a few days ago that I'm putting together has just been updated and now has all three volumes up and functional.
http://bunpou.neocities.org/

Now I'm going to start working on a table of contents section for the top of each volume page, so concepts can simply be clicked on to go directly to them as opposed to scrolling. Wanted to have the actual content up before doing that, should have been up a day or two ago, my bad.
After the ToC are up for each volume I'm going to start working through converting the note images and adding them to the pages progressively, maybe one a week or something, a bunch at a time. It might take a few months to do them all but I think we can all agree that it will be a lot more useful to have a textual version of the full entries that can be searched and used with rikaisama, etc.

If anyone wants the site in it's current form for whatever personal reasons, I'm uploading it to a mediafile folder here (should be up in a few minutes or so):

I forgot to add, I'll be adding the converted note images as individual text files in a folder within that mediafire folder, alongside the updated (and current, as an archive) versions of each page, for sake of completion and flexibility.
An anon the other day was suggesting to use javascript to make the images pop up within the page dynamically, and so if he is around and interesting in doing such a thing, anon can download the site files, alter it in any way desired, and freely host it just like I am, if they like. It's really easy.

Grind out words with flash cards
People develop their vocabulary from just living.

You don't get that privilege, so you must grind away at cards to develop one.

But words are useless without learning grammar, so make sure you prioritize that before going insane with the vocab.

I usually find my sleep schedule drifting into staying up later and later and I usually correct this by staying up for like 24-30 hours one day and then sleeping for like 12-14 hours to wake up at a normal time. Now that I've started Anki, I'm not really sure how to manage this. Is it advisable to do Anki twice in one "day" (as in twice before you go to sleep), or would it be better to just change skip a day in Anki?

He's fat and otaku, I get it. But I have never seen an otaku talking like that in other media.
Is that a heavy-stereotyped pattern like those from moaning-hissing nerds/crazy doctos from American cartoons? If that's the case, it doesn't fit the show's atmosphere at all, if you pay attention to the fucking show.

Besides, he didn't talk like that on the first 3 or so episodes if you pay attention to the fucking show. So it was a late addition from the VA/production.

What tricks you you use to help memorise cards which DON'T involve mnemonics? So far I've got:
>hear somebody saying the word in your head in a silly voice, preferably in a very simple sentence if you can be sure the grammar is correct
>try to spot and name every radical, and if there is one which you don't know find a stroke order diagram to see what's what. Then draw the whole word on five separate pages of the notebook (so you can't check the shape out of the corner of your eye)
>write down ordered lists related to the word you are learning, for example write down all the days of the week in order, or write down the transitive and intransitive version of the verb next to the transitive and intransitive version of it's opposite.
>try and find an object to demonstrate the word (like namasensei does)

What the FUCK
My "trick" is to keep grinding because failing the same card 10 times would take way less time than all the bullshit you're doing.
>>
>>145661258
I have considered trying that approach, however I worry that if I blast through the cards too fast then they won't get a chance to leave short term memory and then most of them will be gone by tomorrow. Also this approach seems more fun.

Is it worth it to keep going?

When I was 12, my family spent a year in Japan for one of my father's business trips. While over there, I fell in love with the Japanese robotics industry, and spent the next 8 years of my life in America alternating between studying Japanese and mechanical engineering. At the point I am at now, I know about 800 - 1000 kanji and am currently working at an engineering firm as a CAD technician/part time programmer.
However I am wondering if I should perhaps give up this effort. I look at the state of the world with climate change, the rise of nationalism and isolationism in many countries, and I fear that by the middle of the century Japan will shut itself off from the outside world to avoid dealing with climate refugees, instead to care for and preserve it's aging population with the robotics industry that initially attracted me to their language and culture.
Near the end of the century I anticipate the world climate crisis to slow down as extreme efforts are made by the new world powers at this point to reverse the damage done on the planet. Although I think some of the isolationist countries would reopen at this point, learning their languages would be made obsolete in favor of instantaneous translation, and technologically mediated telepathy.
Being a woman, it is also going to be hard for me to work in engineering over there. For some reason that did not click in my head until now, and it is part of what is making me lose confidence in my decision to learn Japanese.
If I am to finish learning Japanese now, perhaps the only time I will ever use it will be during a series of 2-week to 3-month vacations I am planning in the coming decades, and during those stays I will have to watch as the country I am visiting becomes more and more uncomfortable with my presence there. In light of all this, does anyone think I should give up and abandon learning Japanese? Perhaps to learn Swedish or some other Northern language instead?

It's not the moon radical though, it's a (highly-modified) version of 肉. It's a common mistake to think it comes from 'moon/month' when it actually comes from 'meat/flesh'. I think it makes a lot more sense that way, too.
>>
Is it just me or is the kanji grid add-on not in the list of add-ons anymore?
>>
>>145666471
What's the difference, you pedantic fuck? It still looks like moon.
>>

I didn't mean to trigger you so hard. I just think that knowing where it comes from makes a lot more sense if you're going to memorize kanji that have this radical.

>>

Since radicals were intended to distinguish between homophones by their meaning, the difference is that characters with the flesh radical typically have something to do with flesh and not the moon.

I imagine if you do more you'll run into problems later on unless you're particularly good with languages and/or have lots of time to study.
Something like 40 words a day is really a fuckton if you think about it. You would have native tier vocab after just 3 years.
>>
Why do the guide links default to suggesting view instead of viewing mode?
>>
>>145667536
So you imagine that if you have more time to study you can learn more vocab? I dunno sounds kinda far fetched.

That's not necessarily true, you just need to allow more time to Japanese. Of course if you have a tight schedule it will, but if you spend two hours on nip a day at least, you can make it.

No one actually does 40 cards a day for a meaningful period of time though. The people who claim to invariably give up and lower new cards after a few months.

That goes for everything, man. I can't imagine reading translations anymore, everything loses so much charm

The reason people lower it isn't because it's too hard, it's because at some point, you run into less unknown words in what you're reading. Say you do 40 cards a day for five months, that's already 6000 words. Unless you constantly expose yourself to new kinds of literature, you won't learn an unlimited amount of words.

Nah, it definitely doesn't apply to everything. Certain writers focus more on writing interesting events and narratives, which obviously lend themselves to translation as opposed to those who specialise in interesting prose or language-specific dialogue (I'm sure you can think of a few examples immediately). The Haruhi books come somewhere in the middle here.

And while repeated explanations might be frustrating for an experienced reader, it makes the series as a whole very much more accessible to, well, foreign language learners like us. It is after all aimed at high school kids and below.

>>145668744
That's a shame, because you won't be able to experience some of, or should I say the new character who steals the show entirely.

>>145668690
I would definitely label it as an 'Advanced' series. I marked it in the Reading List as Early Advanced but Tanigawa clearly improves his writing in leaps and bounds with each new volume and the difficulty ramps up quite quickly.
>>
>>145669715
When you say the difficulty ramps up, are you talking about vocab/grammar or more about how easily you can grasp the meaning of the events happening in the book?

>>145669836
Those two come hand in hand, don't they?

As for how easily you can grasp the meaning of the events happening in the book, you can always rely on Koizumi to explain all of it.

When I was watching the anime, I found it needlessly long and annoying, but now I see how useful it is to people who are new to SF or just shitty at the language.
>>
>>145669917
Yes they do, but understanding also depends on how easily one can understand context and cultural references. If it's only a matter of how much vocab and grammar you know, reading early wouldn't matter at all, but it's really much more than that. Take NisiOisiN's wordplay for instance.

Surely スミス大学 means Smith College.

Why does it say incorrect, even the explanation says I don't need to insert a particle.

Apparently the Android app JED doesn't allow exporting to Google Docs or Anki any longer. Does anyone know a way to work around this? I tagged 1,000+ words in the past week and I don't want to have to manually mine them.
>>
This may or may not be the right place to ask, but did any of you put in a few to several hours each day while also working taxing jobs? I'm looking to try to push myself to learn again, but I'm afraid I will be too exhausted after work to be able to absorb information as well/correctly.

I'm a night owl who works 7am-4pm and hits the gym before work 2-3 days of the week. It might be a little too much at this point to try and cut myself into that time frame. Perhaps the question should be aimed more at trying to study after work as opposed to before. I might try that if nothing else does, though. I do have 2-3 days where I don't go to the gym, and I might be able to turn it into time to study.
