Good to see animu that deserve renewal getting renewed. Shame it only gives me painful nostalgia for Japan mountain hiking times though.

Well just go there for your next holiday then, I'm sure multiple airlines fly from your country anon.

Fuji is a pretty comfy climb if you go in summer.

I can barely handle hiking sand dunes I think this would kill me.

Fuji is literally a babby-tier minor incline for the most part. If you're after something more gentle though and mountain-focused consider a multi-day gentle hike of the Kumano Kodo.

I will definitely attempt one of them whenever I get the chance to visit. Thanks for the encouragement anon.

Those pictures are beautiful

Dewa Sanzan or Fuji are good summer choices, Yakushima/a Kodo trail are also good and can be done any time of year. But honestly there are good hiking opportunities all over the country. Depends what you >feel like.

What other places are good to climb during the winter?

Might just be a joint advertisement with the mountain recognition day they have though. Hope it is something more.

Well you're really limiting yourself in winter since even mid-height mountains can become inaccessible both due to snow and lack of public transport, if you're a hardcore alpine climber though guess they'd be fun.

The lower-height mountains near major cities like Rokko near Kobe would still be enjoyable and not require much planning, most Jap cities should have similiar nice hikes nearby, Mitake or Takao in Tokyo for example, Miyajima's trails in Hiroshima, the Kurama area in Kyoto, etc.

But really hiking in winter is just less fun all around. A trail like the Kodo or the Shikoku Pilgrimage by bicycle (or foot if you have two months to spare) or the such might be more enjoyable and unique if you're after something more famous than those lesser known minor mountains, depending how much time you want to invest.

Are trails cozy in the fall? That's personally when I'd want to go.

They should be fairly nice, however higher peaks like Fuji and some others will already be closed to the general public by then. If you choose some specifically known for their autumn beauty like Miyajima's or some of those on the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route it should be even more enjoyable.

That said temples (especially those of Kyoto) are hard to beat when it comes to fall-colour prettiness though due to their well manicured gardens and the like.

Is it really a 21% grade? For several hours, that sounds pretty awful for anyone not used to it.

But more importantly, hiking with bazillions of people also on the same trail sounds annoying. Solitude per >>145384917 seems nicer.

>21% grade

There's multiple trails: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4952.html

The Kohechi is probably the most practical long one, Nakahechi is a good mid-tier, then there's the Iseji non-trail which is basically just walking pretty coastline on roads since hardly any of the original trail remains. If you're even moderately healthy none should pose too much of a challenge though.

And yes you'll only run into a handful of others on the trail outside of the few short peak times, but even then it won't be anywhere close to the constant Fuji climbing season people-stream, (finding accomodation along the trail may become problematic though).

Oh wait, you meant Fuji right.

It gets steep at certain points which throws out the grade average, but there's multiple trails for it as well: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6901.html Yoshida or Fujinomiya trail are pretty easy.

Don't be a bitch and climb it from halfway up via bus like 99% of people though, start from the base on the Yoshida trail (the only base trail) and do a full day hike of it like a man.

Also before you reach the 5th station where everyone buses to it's basically just you and maybe one other person an hour as well which is neat. All the decades-ago abandoned 1st - 4th stations and buildings on the path are pretty neato too, (out of business because again bus fags).
