I wouldn't say it's that hard to figure out, especially because we've seen this many times.
When Gray fought Lyon, Grays ice was stronger because he was stronger
When Natsu fought phantom fire man his fire was stronger because he was stronger
When two people with the same element fight, the one with more power wins. In this scenario Invel clearly has more power. It doesn't mean gray is fucked, the same situation happened when he fought Silver, but he found a way to bypass the power difference.

Fuck every other plot thread, the only thing I'm actually looking forward too is Erza revelation and fight vs Eileen.

I enjoy Gray's fights a bit more since he usually wins with a gimmick instead of a nakama asspull like Natsu or Erza.

Hint at a god and fight Anksheram arc with Eileen being some kind of divine spy manipulating the events around Zeref.

You guys don't like Gray's fights? I think they're amongst the least asspully in FT, or more accurately, they make some sense.
Take the Silver fight, he used a projectile to render Silver's immunity to ice useless, whereas the other fights became notorious for super nakama asspull.
Speaking of the Ultear fight, he didn't defeat her by talking about Ur, he defeated her by utilizing the only weak point in Arc of Time, it was only after she lost that he talked about her mother.
His other fights weren't as bad as most, all in all I'd put him as having the best fights.

Ajeel, Jacob, Neinhart, and Dimaria never died in the first place. They were just defeated, knocked out, captured, etc. Serena, Wahl, and Bradman were the only ones who died. Neinhart revived them via his magic which basically lets him create a copy of dead people based on someone's memories of them. However either as an innate flaw of the magic, or a limitation of Neinhart's power, those three aren't as strong as they were when they were alive.
