Back on topic: watch it OP, it's definitely worth it, SHAFT experimented with what later became its style here and if you like dark humor then SZS is for you.

And if you ever decide to read the manga you're in for a wild experience, personally I regard it as one of my absolute favorites.

Have you watched Pani Poni Dash? It had a lot of the style that people attribute to SZS years before it. It has a similar kind of humour as well and Ai Nonaka's character in it is great and never fails to remind me of Kafuka.

I just finished Zan the other day. The whole series was truly a joy to watch, though the second season was my favorite.

I forgot most of it but I saw two seasons.
The problem I had with it were the references. I think it was in Zoku when I gave up because I couldn't get anything and most jokes were over my head.

When did you watch it? It's definitely not a series for "beginners," that is, people who haven't watched a lot of anime or who aren't all that familiar with Japanese culture. I started watching the first season back when it was airing, but that was when I'd just started watching anime and most of it went right over my head. Now that I've watched a bunch more shows and learned a bit about Japan, it's much easier to understand. There are still a lot of jokes I don't get, but the ones I do are hilarious.

This was definitely the problem, I know. I was 15 or 16 years old. I found the first season hilarious though. I got bored around the ultraman jokes i a festival IIRC.
I should try to watch it again, I know. Mostly because the animation and style was very interesting and set the tone for my actual tastes.

Madoka has much higher production values (esp. the movies of course), but SZS is Shaft's best series. It seems like everyone from the seiyuus to the overworked animators had fun working on it.

Yes. I watched the first season of Zetsubou-sensei a year ago and the only thing I remember is how sexy the school nurse was. Everything else is a blur.
