I really enjoy stories based more on the tell than the show, so I really enjoyed it. If you don't think you can watch two characters talking with pretty pictures for about 3/4 of each episode, for 88 episodes, you might want to look somewhere else

Tried watching Bake and it fucking sucked, it was nothing but irrelevant and boring conversations filled with pretentious shit. Like the show tries to shove DEEP and MEANINGFUL aesthetic into your brain but as soon as you realize it's only pretentiousness all the ilusion crumbles and you're left with just a boring slideshow with the ocassional really good fanservice scene.

I typically hate harems and the only character I'd fuck is Araragi, but even I enjoy it. It's heavy on fanservice but the dialogue, characterization and directing are all top notch. It's a very unique, charismatic series and Bake is at least worth watching.

There's nothing pretentious about Shinbo's directing - it's just visual window dressing to break up the monotony of a show that's 90% talking.

Anime fans are so used to being told that confusing visuals are supposed to be meaningful that they can't tell the difference between symbolism and something that's clearly just there to look cool.

Think I get your point but I still think it was completely unnecessary, LoGH was also sometimes nothing but talking and pictures but it still managed to be interesting without trying so hard to embellish every scene.

Idk, maybe it's just that with all the love this series gets I went in expecting some kind of masterpiece and ended up getting dissapointed.

I...I don't understand. Most fans loved Bake and were put off by Nise. I dropped Nise after episode 8 and nearly dropped the series entirely had it not been for Neko Black. How'd you manage to continue the series in the first place if you though Bake was boring.

Maybe you should try watching Bake again with that mindset? If not you could just move on to Nise, And then watch from there. The other arcs, while being filled with fanservice, still involved the characters being involved in more interesting/fun situations, as well as having actually decent character development/dynamics with each other. The girls, and other side characters who aren't part of Araragi's harem get fleshed out to the point where there are more to their lives than just Araragi, and even Araragi himself gets a few moments of actual character development. I mean it's nothing really deep but it's something more than most harem series have, and the character dynamics still manage to be enjoyable.

In comparison with other shows at the time and given the fact that it's a 100+ episodes show it's way above average.
Not to mention that given the serious nature of the subject matter it needed 'talking heads'. You can't discuss statecraft and warfare through imagery alone.
