It's an anime, not a game, and I think they've done a good job of drawing the distinctions so far. If you believe this is another one of them it makes sense, they've shown the effectiveness of introducing the cast early in AE so they might be planning around getting more mileage out of Monaca by revealing her here and showcasing the sides of the plot as a drama instead of a mystery. If we even suspect Gekkobot of being the traitor, then as viewers we get the luxury of being able to react every time the cast falls asleep and she's on screen.

Someone in the last thread was wondering what Izuru's plan was, so I posted this as a theory.

Theory time: What if Naegi was the class representative for class 78 or at least his own classroom? Most of the people like him especially his girls plus he's bros with most of the guys so if anyone was probably chosen for the spot of class rep besides Junko somehow, it would probably be Naegi.

So people would be like "that makes no sense since Naegi would have to have been in the first killing game then"

So how about this? What if Naegi was intended to participate in the student council meeting along with Chiaki, Soshun, Madarai etc but because some bad luck happened to him he wasn't able to show up but we know how his bad luck usually brings forth good luck for him so what if his bad luck of him not being able to show up for the meeting brought forth his good luck on not having to be trapped in the killing game?

Izuru could have likely taken his place since Izuru was the only person out of the 15 participants that wasn't a member of the student council.

i might be 100% wrong but i firmly belive that Naegi's luck is somewhat similar to hopeman's luck but not quite , like with Nagito, the universe will bend itself to end in a sittuation where he will be favored, but with Naegi the universe will bend itself for a situation where he can bring hope to the world, but that means that his "luck" wont protect him the same way it protects Nagito,for example, he was picked by chance to go to hope's peak, got put in a death game and many of his friends died, but that all ended in a situation where he defeated junko, fast foward a bit, his plan to fix the despairs goes south,but it ends in a situation where ai junko is defeated, and the most dangerous of the despairs goes back to normal, im telling u guys naegi is OP

I dislike Junko as a villain because we never get to see her do shit. She ended the world off-screen, but in regards to even what we see her do as Monokuma, it's just her strong-arming with her position and not even doing a great job at it. In both titles the bulk of her villainy is throwing power around, and then being forced to throw more power around when that doesn't work, and then have to cheat when that doesn't work.

Basically, I just can't take her seriously at all. I don't like her motivation either, I can get behind a villain that's devoted towards a philosophy but Junko's "despair" is so loosely defined. She's only powerful in DR1 because of backstory, and she's only powerful in SDR2 because of Izuru.

Monaca lost by herself but that's what I like about her. We see her arranging this insane villainous plan that's flawless except that Toko gets character development. She has a lot of power backing her, but it's all her power. She manipulates the entire cast, prepares her own arena, and commits these awful atrocities; and we know how it all goes down.

As a character I can completely understand her too. She's not one of those morally gray villains either, she's complete fucking evil but I get why she's evil. That's the kind of life she chose because she wanted to be like someone, she's a child that has toys for weapons and knows how to play with them. It just feels like much better writing to me.

Shit, I really need to finish last AE chapter before the episode airs. But it's such a boring slog even with gameplay skipping.

Personally I think all villains in that vein are shit.

The most memorable villains for me from any medium have always been the ones that get a lot of screen time and build-up. Using one of the really common examples, Kefka's not great because he's a nihilist clown, he's great because you see him being a nihilist clown. He has a journey beside you during the game where you goes from mid-boss to big bad.

There is nothing that didn't work.
The only thing1 she got "wrong" in DR1 was the cast chosing hope, but she accounted for that possibility, so even if it didn't go as planned, the chance of losing was part of her plan.
In DR2 everything went as planned too, with no need to rework anything, she made it so it didn't matter which choice they'd make as despair was in every possible choice.
The only thing she didn't account for was them being fine with it, chosing future, accepting both sides.

Junko's plans work because she has overwhelming power. They're never clever plans, she dangles motivation in front of the DR1 cast until it works out. I'm willing to accept that she knows Mondo will kill Chihiro because she's the Ultimate Analyst, but from the very beginning her ability is situated in the background premise.

And then when that stopped working she put together a messy plan with Mukuro's corpse that almost fell apart if not for her cheating her trial rules. It's true that she only loses because she lets herself lose in the end, but she's only winning in the first place because it was impossible to fail without her fucking up on her own.

Also Izuru is by all accounts the mastermind of the best parts of the SDR2 plan, which is creating the framework where Junko has all of her power and setting up the situation where every choice was failure. Junko's part in that plan was mostly starving a bunch of kids. Might've had to take the long route to that point if Komaeda didn't fuck everything up in the first place too.

Her power as a villain has never been my problem. My problem is that Junko could be replaced by someone with a completely different motive and personality and nothing would change. Her plots aren't clever, she just plays with a stacked deck.

Even in the case the theory by which Izuru planned for Junko's defeat would end up to be true, it still ended in a way Junko planned all along.
What imho makes Junko a great villain is not how she carefully planned her manipulation so that people would react as she wanted them to, or how she carefully planned murders, but her way to make plans so that there is no possible way for them to not end into an occurrence that will still make Junko a partial winner, even when people wouldnt act and react as she wanted them to.

See again, I don't disagree with your assessment of Junko having done what she did. I'm saying that none of that shit makes her any more appealing as a villain.

I accept fully that her Ultimate Analyst allows her to delegate and predict what's going to happen, and I accept that she finds victory in her defeats, but I don't think that's worth shit. All of her ability to do this is reliant on the reader's ability to hear about her doing this, and then not calling bullshit on any of it. Junko is powerful because she's powerful, it's an aspect that's completely circular and only enters play because it's convenient. She's a master manipulator because you're told she is, when you never see her doing it. She's capable of applying these motives because she happens to have them, when there's no lead in to it.

Understanding this, you come to accept that Junko can pretty much do anything, which detracts from her because it takes away characterization on what's at all special about her. Monaca is great because she has her strengths and her weaknesses, you see all of it, and she takes it as far as possible.

Also your final example for Junko only applies to the very finale of DR1, that is to say, it doesn't actually impact anything outside of the very scene it occurs in at all. AE was her killing time because she was useless, and SDR2's finale was Izuru destroying her so badly that she couldn't even keep character.
