That's not what happened. Shunsui's swords were always his. The flower part of his Zanpakto created another spirit manifesting as the madness aspect. This isn't the first time btw. Zangetsu and Yachiru were both able to create other Zanpakto. It is also possible that Shunsui actually fucked the Zanpakto, since they have/had an intimate relationship. Shunsui used then the second sword to hide Nanao's Zanpakto, which is just another of his Shikai games. Nanao's zanpakto is her own and Shunsui's is his own. Shunsui simply hid Nanao's.

It is a cermonial sword used to assist in rituals. And gods were mentioned throughout the series. Aizen became close to godhood, when he transcended. Yhwach, Pernida, Gerard, Mimihagi and possibly Gremmy are at least partly gods. And the Soul King is a complete god. The sword would have worked on all of them.

Furthermore, the sword is said to disperse the powers of a god into all directions. The Soul King is a god, whose powers and body parts were dispersed into all directions. The implication is, that the sword was used in the past to defeat the Soul King. The ritual it was most likely used for was the one that transformed the Soul King into a lynchpin and trapped him inside the crystal prison. The god sword was most likely responsible for all his limbs being sentient and possibly even Yhwach existing.

Technically almost every Bankai is a deus ex machina.
