Gundam 00 for sure, and to a lesser extent any Gundam in general really,
though most are reluctant to kill off MCs.
Valvrave also does this I think, but that one has a full-retard "300 years later" ending, so it's kinda hard to infer who actually survived and who didn't.

I can't think of any more recent shows right now, I just know that I've seen this a lot in Sunrise shows.

But then they start killing off every character that you'd come to learn to like after all the character introductions and beach episodes...

The first half of the series is one of those feel-good animus. The second half, not quite so much.

But it was source material for a good amount of Doujins in the mid 2000s, before there was nothing but Touhou, Im@s, and KanColle.
