The original is far better.
Brotherhood is too cartonish.

This is a shounen manga.

The original anime is seinen. Expect a very different experience.

The latter also has a better handle on the themes, in my opinion, since it doesn't have to whitewash the edgy stuff. Dead people constantly coming back to life kills any legitimacy Brotherhood's writing could have had.

I say both are worth watching. I watched Brotherhood first and it was a lot better watching it again after watching the original series. Brotherhood doesn't go into certain topics as much so having watched the original helped explain some things. I suppose reading the manga would work too but I never did.

I couldn't say which one I like more. I would like the original more if the ending wasn't shit. Brotherhood wasn't ruined by stupid shit but I thought it had less overall substance to the story.

If you had ever planned to watch 2003 and like it, watching it before Brotherhood would have been the only way. You can try to watch it now but you probably won't understand what made 2003 great now that you have Brotherhood in your head to compare it to.
