The less anime you've seen, the less developed your personal taste is, so I'd say yes there's a correlation. There's a lot more to taste than just preferring "sci-fi" or "slice of life" that you probably won't pick up on unless you are more familiar to the medium.

For example, my taste is more or less centered around lighthearted atmosphere.
