Besides the shielding, being linked to an alpha driver boosts the progress' power in general. For example, when Saya and Amane meet for the first time, Saya's power rose up when she touched Amane's hand. Also, when Hinata told Aoi to cut off her link (when they were getting possessed), Aoi said they would lose battle strength if they did so.

All in all, I'm sure that even with an imperfect link, Hinata was still in better conditions than Saya, who had no link at all. The fact that Saya won is probably some foreshadowing that she's more special than she thinks.

EXR is new. They introduced rule changes to go along with the anime, with new a card type: Exceed cards, and the EXR rarity is apparently specific to those. Exceed cards have conditions for being able to use them, such as all your Progress cards in play being cards of a particular character or color. The EXR cards released seem to be ones with conditions limiting each of them to Miumi, Sofina, Ramiel, Euphiria or Mayuka. Seems like there will ones released for the anime team too, around the time the anime ends.
