>draw a fairy
>call it an elf
berserk came out in 1989, you have to wonder if miura had even read lord of the rings, he was probably pretty young. as well as what exactly japanese culture considered elves back then, before "worldwide culture" became a thing.
also if you search "elf" on google images you just get green faggot santa helpers.

Prior to Tolkien, the term elf and fairy were interchangeable to many people.

hey, it's half true. if your country doesn't know what lord of the rings is until 1972 then it doesn't have much time to get acquainted with the elf.

Well, actually...
...in the original irish/north mythology, elves and fairies are technically the same. Same goes to dwarves.
Only Tolkien invented the modern elf and dwarf. Still, have no idea when the first fairy appeared. I guess earlier in fairytales, like the one from the grimm brothers...
If anyone's read Enid Blyton's kids stories she too describes elves as tiny creatures like puck. Though without wings.

Well, if you want to write a story set in a world where the creatures typically known as Chimeras are called Elves, I don't see why not.

Elf, fairy, pixie, goblin, gnome etc. were all interchangeable terms up until about the 1930s. "Fairy" itself had always been something of an umbrella term; hence "fairy tales".

Elves and fairies were one and the same till Tolkien showed up.
