It makes the following word more polite. Keigo is weird, I know.

Note that this generally only applies to words of Japanese origin; words of Chinese origin are usually prefixed with 御(ご) instead.

Do note that for some words, such as ご飯(ごはん), the polite form of the word is pretty much the only one -- in fact, if you see the 飯 without the ご in front of it, it's a completely different word (めし).

it's not efficient, you are not a computer, you are not a japanese-english dictionary you learn things efficiently through practice not memorization
>>
>>145263336
I think it's better to at least do anki for 1000 words or so to get some kind of foundation.
Not necessarily because it's better for learning, but because it's better for motivation and confidence. When I first started reading I had at least maybe 1.5k words known and it was still discouraging as fuck to see that endless stream of new words and kanji coming at me.

It's like anki is a flood gate. Even if you're doing reading while using it you still don't panic because you don't feel obligated to learn all the new shit you see while reading, you're just "doing reading practice" and you'll really learn them when you see it in anki.
But without that anki safety net you kind of panic and wonder how the hell you're ever going to accomplish this monumental task.

>>145263748
You're drawing a false distinction between 'practice' and 'memorization'. Anki is just focused practice.
>>
>>145263336

Isn't learning Japanese a reason enough? It's not like I lifted all those cards from some dictionary at random.
>>
>>145264044

>>
>>145264092
Practice involves reading, writing and speaking the language. Anki is just memorization.
Why don't you open a dictionary for begginers and read 20 words everyday?
I can agree with >>145263799 it may be a start before being able to read but the less time you spend using it instead of real practice the best it will be for you and the learning of the language.
>>
>>145263799
>I think it's better to at least do anki for 1000 words or so to get some kind of foundation.
>Not necessarily because it's better for learning, but because it's better for motivation and confidence
I agree. The amount of words is arguable doe. But with a solid ground of words you don't feel so discouraged when starting to read. There's this book with the 6000 most common words in Japanese. I think to start with the first 2000 of this is pretty good. 2000 sounds like much, but they included also grammarpoints like the te form or oku and shit as words for some reason
But a lot of anons here are ankidrones, so one should really do the jump from anki to mining at some point.
>>
>>145264628

Is there any way to retain vocabulary better than just anki? I find that I'll remember words for a day with no context, and then completely forget about it when I see it used. . .best case scenario, it's vaguely familiar, and then when I realize it's an anki word it's permanently retained.

When I read 2chan posts I find it helps my retention tremendously to occasionally scan backward through posts I just read and see if I can recall the kanji in reverse order.

For example if I read a post like:
>おっぱいの平均サイズがインフレしてるのすごい好き
and say I didn't know any of those words/kanji then I would just spend a little extra time studying them, and move on. Then a few posts later I would scan them all backwards and when I came to this post I would say
>好 - su
>均 - kin
>平 - hei
while at the same time thinking of the meaning of the word the kanji are found in. Bonus points if I can remember the "meaning" of the kanji too, but I don't put too much effort into that.

I know it seems a little silly, but doing things in reverse is actually a really effective way to improve memory in almost anything. Musicians even do this when trying to memorize music by playing the piece backwards or trying to switch the hands they're playing with, etc..

Try it for a few days and I bet you'll be shocked at how poorly you do even on words you think you know very well. It forces you to make sure you're not cutting corners.

I've done some study on basic japanese grammar, but have come to the conclution that a bigger vocabulary is needed before continuing.
I'm using Core2K/6K right now and I think the best way for me to remember the different words is to write them down on a piece of paper as I pratice.
My question is would you suggest that I write the whole sentence that I get represented with from the Core2K/6K or should I just focus on the word itself.
>>
>>145278529
You think wrong.
>>
>>145278529
You just need a basic grasp of grammar and then refine it further when you encounter unknown stuff in reading/listening.

Forcing yourself to cram advanced grammar rules won't be fun and you'll never get a secure feel for it. There'll always be a bit of self questioning until you acquire it naturally over time.

Stevie agrees.

Is the anon responsible for

http://dekinai.neocities.org/ ?
If so, I've finished updating the formation tables for the DoJG deck, which you may want to use to update the data your script is using to generate the /dojg/ page.

For reference, the weight difference between the older tables at the newer tables (all of them) is:
Newer tables: 735KB
Older tables: 3258KB
The deck CSS and data can be found here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1QM2mwLf5Ot5_rZye4bsCsCKtsSWdCcjZCD3cMy7Q0bg/edit?usp=sharing
Blank entries in the table column mean that the given entry does not have a formation table. I fixed up a couple of minor typographical errors here and there in the process. Nothing major.
>>
>>145278529
There's no point trying to write words you don't even know yet. Just focus on the word you are trying to learn, by all means write it but also try and visualize situations where it might be used. The sentences in core 6k are generally not very evocative so come up with your own if you can, even if it's something pathetically simple.

>What's the best way to learn radicals
Probably just a radical deck for Anki. Feel free to draw them if you feel like it helps you remember them, isn't the case for everyone though.

>how to use them to look up kanji?
Either on Jisho by clicking the Radicals next to the search bar or by learning the dictionary radicals for each kanji and then looking up those, although I don't know much about that whole thing

>Also is it even better than just grinding a kanji deck?
Hard to say. For different people different things work best. Some get mature retention of 98% by jumping straight into core, others plateau at 96% despite doing individual kanji study and a radical deck.

Personally I'd say you're set if you do a radical deck and then go straight to a vocab deck. Instead of doing a kanji deck you can just look up unfamiliar kanji from your vocab deck on Jisho. Sounds inconvenient at first, but once you're 1k or so words in it's pretty smooth.
>>
How do you get hiragana readings to sit neatly above their respective Kanji on an Anki card? The Core2k deck seems to put the reading into [ ] square brackets next to the Kanji but that doesn't work when I try to make my own cards in a different deck. Presumably they're doing some formatting thing that I don't understand and the readings are actually their own separate field/line?

Something confusing the hell out of me is how the hell multiple words are ordered when they all modify a single word.
In core I just got a sentence with 「襟の大きいコート」 and that makes absolutely no sense to me how that's "Coat with a big collar", looks more like "Big coat with a collar" to me, since the adjective is directly next to "coat".
Shouldn't it be something like 「大きい襟のコート」, but both look and sound really awkward.
For some reason the former is correct though since I found it in the example sentences of core, and those must be correct.
Can anyone help me clear this up?
Please excuse my stupidity.
>>
>>145279933
>Geh, I dunno. Do you think it's good to learn how to dismantle a car or just learn how to drive?

Depending on you I guess, knowing the parts of a car sure improves your ability to drive it.
The question is though, can't you drive it efficiently enough without knowing?
>>
>>145280697
You could memorize them beforehand, but once you learned ~3 kanji using the same radical that share a reading you'll have it down as well.
>>
>>145280473

Look at this
君と同じ色の髪をした
I coloured my hair the same as yours

の takes the whole clause standing before it and applies it to describe the thing thats after it.

Of course there's always several ways to express things and if you read more it'll come naturally. Just stop trying to compare the English translation back to Japanese.
>>
>>145280697
Might as well memorise the meanings too since a lot of them double up as a kanji in their own right.

>>

Learn stroke order and try to recognise radicals, learning their readings individually is pretty pointless and can be done far later.
Learning Kanji in compounds is far more useful than learning individual radicals.

for: 「大きい襟のコート」
That is: The coat with the big collars

Like anon said above: Don't start trying to think in terms of Japanese to English or English to Japanese
>>
>>145280876
The の usage might be correct, but I don't think it is on that anon's example because it's an adjective.

>>145280743
I might be incorrect, but I think that sentence is wrong. Well, I don't know core but I think I've read people saying it has some incorrect stuff here and there.

襟の大きいコート does look like a "the collar of a big coat".
Adjectives are always applied to it's next word or things would be really fucked up.

あなたの大きいチンコで = With your big penis...

It would be fucking weird if it were backwards:
"The penis of the big you"
>>
>>145281242
the の in your second example is a possesive の and different

「襟の大きい」コート
あなたの「大きいチンコ」

You could substitute the の in the first sentence with が but not in the second one.

I think it would be 襟の大きい (コート) The coat with large lapels like anon said.
I earlier thought it was a large coat with lapels but I didn't really think.

When I think about it, you can refer to the car with big tyres like タイヤの大きい車, like really specifying between cars, "that one with big tyres".

I think that I'm going to start zooming in on Japanese websites. Having the text at the same size as they are in VNs makes facing a wall of Japanese text without activating Rikai much easier.

Going from anime, manga, and VNs (maybe not a 100% reliable source, I know), it seems like the Japanese themselves generally avoid viewing their own text as small as we generally view English writing online, too.

Jisho has both but lists it as a 12 stroke kanji, along with the diagrams for it, which would be 13 strokes based on the older form. The font which shows up in your browser is dependant on the font you are using.

Worth a bit of reading:

For whatever reason the font I'm using shows the older form as well.

Well, I am on Chrome for four reasons:

1. Performance. Whether this is true nowadays I'm not sure but a few years ago Chrome just seemed faster.
2. "New tab" option upon right clicking on a tab. Ctrl+T is not the same because it opens a tab way over to the right instead of at the mouse's location.
3. "Duplicate" option upon right clicking on a tab. Very useful in certain situations.
4. The more tabs you open, the more the tabs all squoosh together into ever-smaller tabs. I prefer this to having to scroll left or right to click on my other tabs.

But now I am switching back over to Firefox because of Rikaisama, and also because my Chrome CJK font rendering is all screwed up for some reason.

Experience language used in different contexts, always hearing Japanese from the point of view of a news anchor or an aidoru seems to me rather limiting, you open yourself to different phrases and idioms. etc, with different types of people.
Younger people, older people, people without jobs, females, males etc.

In the UK if all you watched were BBC programmes you'd pretty surprised when you came to England with the expectations of hearing us speak like they do on the telly.

Dear Diary:
Ok i'm doing it. I"m going to pay for Wani Kani. I kept trying to use free resources, but this morning my wife and I went for coffee and I spent nine dollars on the two of us. Why not just use that for Wani Kani. If I was neet I would just use seven different resources and Anki, but I'm not not neet and I have money to blow sometimes.
I guess because I grew up on 4chin + internet, I sometimes forget that I am no longer neet who jacks off to 2d pornographs.

Don't tell me you thought you were done so soon, little anime girl. There's thousands more!

2k kanji 6k words, 6k kanji 2k words, it's all the same to me

Guys are there words where let's say an う that comes after an お doesn't extend it and is spoken on it's own?

Like 拾う for example?

>>
Hi. Is this my Daily English Thread here?
>>
>>145294500
You'll learn to hate it soon.

About half way through they run out of new radicals to teach you, so they just reteach you kanji you should already know since 10 levels ago as new radicals just to slow you down even further.
This stops at level 46, where you can level up with just the base kanji.

Additionally, if you don't use some of these scripts you'll hate it all the more.

Do you listen to music during your reviews or do you concentrate in deep and stony silence?
>>
>>145277247
not him but I was there tonight. I really REALLY wish all the best matsuris and fun stuff wasn't in the summer. Just being outside os so damn uncomfortable due to the humidity right now, it's hard to actually enjoy things. Even the massive waterpark thing they have at Osaka castle right now does nothing to provide relief from the relentless humidity
>>
>>145296744
I say everything out loud, especially the sentences, so music would be weird.

I listened to this today while doing my reps.
Pretty comfy anki session.

Can't listen to stuff with lyrics though, as I tend to sing along and get distracted.

Almost always.

Sometimes it's essential to brighten up the dreary rep ritual and other times I have to turn it off to focus on a difficult batch of new cards.

I used to watch streams of people playing video games while I was doing my reps, but at some point I couldn't do it anymore, so now I need silence. I might be able to listen to some instrumental music but I haven't tried it.

Listening to music while doing something makes people feel like they are being more productive, but actually makes them less productive.

I need help /djt/

I'll explain the situation.

>had to work shift 10 days straight
>couldn't keep up with my reps didn't even do them for the last 3 days
>there are multiple cards that I forgot

How do I get back into it? I had like 100 cards I didn't even remember ever seeing.
I suspended 100 cards and capped reviews at 200 and plan on slowly adding the other cards again.

Do you think that works?

I feel like I forgot so much and got worse in general instead of improving.
Fuck haven't even read or learned grammar in weeks.
>>
>>145297732

>>
>>145297732
There's nothing out of the ordinary here.
Just keep doing them 100-200 cards a day and add new ones once you're done.

I once came back to like 1200 reviews. I think it awoke a hidden power in me and now I do reviews without it taking any strain on me.

>Deck that seems designed around recalling the meanings of isolated kanji despite the book literally telling you not to do that
>>
>>145298732
you sure made a shit......sumon all right
>>
>>145298850
There's another deck with the associated vocab.
>>
>>145298884
It doesn't matter. The point is that the deck that is just isolated kanji->meaning is literally something the book tells you not to do. Might as well just do RTK or something if you want a bunch of useless context free information.
>>
>>145298732
見るより自分で運動したほうが楽しい。
>>
>>145298947
Uh, yes it does matter because you do them in tandem. The RTK decks have jack shit for vocab.
>>
>>145299044
It doesn't make it any less of a waste of time. There is no fucking reason to do those cards when you can just get the exact same information through the vocabulary directly.
>>
>>145299122
How about because kanji are much easier to grasp, then you can drill vocab for those kanji armed with some idea of what the squiggles impart onto the words.
>>
>>145299229
That's why you read the KLC entry for the kanji so you're familiar with the rough meaning before starting the vocabulary for it. Actually memorizing it individually is dumb, since you get the same effect by doing the vocabulary anyway.
>>
What is the meaning of "sumon all right"?

>>145298989
That's right. But it's too hot.
日本の夏をなめると危険ですよ。
>>
>>145297410
>typical japanese お世辞
>cute
>>
>>145299299
Then why did they publish the KLC, with mnemonics and shit for better individual memorization, in the first place?
>>
>>145299374
The mnemonics are designed to help you initially remember and differentiate more difficult kanji, as well as similar kanji from each other. It's not designed for you to actually sit down and commit those mnemonics to long term memory or anything. If you actually read the introduction to the book it explains all of this, and explicitly states you shouldn't bother with memorizing meanings on individual kanji outside of the vocabulary, or with memorizing readings outside of vocabulary.
>>
>>145299597
Incorrect. The book does tell you memorize the meanings of each character. It tells you not to bother with memorizing the various readings on their own; you pick those up by expanding your vocabulary.
>>
>>145279158
猫 because the left part looks like a cat.
>>
>>145297732
Just do your reps.

Anki isn't about learning, it's about not forgetting. Don't forget that. When you lapse cards, that means anki is doing its job.

The only disaster is *after* you don't do your reps for a long time, if you let yourself forget everything, because you don't want to do your reps the whole time.

If you do your reps within the near future, you won't forget. If you don't do your reps, you will forget.

That's the hard part. If you don't do anki, you put off the stress, but if you do anki, you get stressed out every time you lapse something.

That's the joke. Lapsing is good. Lapsing means anki can help you. Getting help is the first step to a bright future. Lapsing is the first step to remembering.
