Yeah. It had great writing but unfortunately this year hasn't been great for visual direction so it still has maintained the lead for best directed anime series of the year so far.

At first I was really upset about how long the flashback was taking.
Then as soon as we got back to modern time I got upset that the flashback had ended.

When you come to terms with the fact that episode one was a flash forward rather than vice versa it goes down easier. I felt the same way as you at first, but on reflection the structure they went with was definitely a good call, being wise to the characters' futures adds a lot I think.

I watched the first season and found it boring, I have no emotional investment in any of the characters, it doesn't have interesting visuals or a stand out OST or anything, and the plot is neither exciting and fun nor as relaxing and comfy as people say (it's no Mushishi). You didn't think the direction of the rakugo performances was anything special? They were incredibly engaging even though the language/cultural barrier made them hard to understand, and considering they could've just been talking heads. It went out of it's way to convey subtle body language and the relation between the stage, audience and performer with angles and perspective. And it framed a lot of non rakugo scenes like a stage too (eg the floor taking up over half the bottom of the screen), the whole thing was a bit theatrical and I love that.

It's still pretty basic by and large. Show an establishing shot of the venue, show the performer beginning the performance, show the audience react, show another section of the performance, maybe with a trippy visual if the performer is particularly good, show the audience react, repeat until the performance is finished. It's effective but there's nothing terribly notable about it.

Aside from everything that's already been mentioned it was notable for how it worked to convey multiple characters being acted out by one person. All it needs is to be effective, it doesn't need to be full of symbolism or nuance or anything fancy- it just needs to make rakugo entertaining for a modern audience, and it pulled it off. I barely understood those stories but they were still fun to watch.

It's not a cinematic masterpiece, but the direction was still worth noticing. Especially in comparison to the overall mediocre bunch of series we've had so far.

It's already won AOTY for me, The storytelling was superb, Just a good story with interesting characters, That's all it takes.

It was just really enjoyable specially when I didn't know much about Rakugo itself it was pretty cool seeing into the world of it and what it's about and takes.

OST is pretty sweet too.

It was still highly engaging, and I think that's what really counts. Making something interesting out of someone telling you a story and still focussing solely on the storyteller's own methods and movements without resorting to a reenactment of it is pretty tricky. They certainly captured the spirit of rakugo pretty well and gave it the respect it deserves.

Rakugo is the best anime I've seen in years. It actually has some originality to it and characters with depth. I can't wait for season 2 and I'm going to pick up the DVD as soon as it's released.
