If you want to get all child psychology about it, the issue is that they got too close too quickly, then hit a problem and neither knew how to respond to it. Now that they've had time to back away from it and process it, they're not in each other's faces about it but still aren't back to where they used to be. They're standoffish with each other but still on the same page enough to unite against a common opponent as a means of showing the other how much they're actually valued because right now, that's in small supply between them after their row where Harada basically blew Gou off as being unimportant and Gou's mad that Harada's putting his pride above their embryonic battery like it doesn't even matter.

Not very. He just doesn't like blindly taking orders that don't make sense and isn't used to having people that actually care for him so he has to fend for himself. Take a good look at his family. His mother is always scolding him, his father is always doing whatever the mother thinks he should do, and his grandfather who is a baseball star doesn't think he can go far in the sport. If he didn't have that posture he would never be able to do anything because he would be feeling sorry for himself instead. He's more selfless than what people give him credit for but I think that counts as a spoiler.

Honestly, I think it's a pretty interesting.

I'm not a self-insert fag so it maybe helps, but I can appreciate a "bitch" character more than a "selfless" character if it's well written. In fact, bitch characters in general then to be more close to humans and therefor more interesting to me.

I'd take 100 characters like him over the usual LN Undergo Lead or the characters like Hotaru from Hyouka for example.

One of my favorite anime ever is Utena because how much it destroy the illusion that people are somehow selfless perfect individuals and everyone is ultimately flawed.

I still want him and Gou to kiss.
