The first arc was establishing the characters and some goofy adventures with mystical creatures, no humans died in it, at least around Goku. Goku wished back the dad of the native kid in the second arc though. The panties wish was a funny way to wrap up the first part though.

Agreed. The problem with Z is that it always has to escalate by magnitudes, it can't be a slow and steady power climb. All of the mystical and super natural elements of Dragonball was pretty much ripped out as soon as Z started and Goku was told he was an alien. Sure, there was the afterlife, but it was more or less turned into a storage bin for characters for them to return later.

GT tried to mend the formula by trying to bring back more adventuring elements, but it suffered to much from carrying all of the problems with Z on its back and brought out the worst of both Dragonball and Z

I just read through Dragon Ball and although I like the early humor bits, I think my favorite parts are the times between Goku's fight with Tao Pai, and Goku defeating Jr. in the Budokai.

So basically the part that's a blend between DB and DBZ.

I felt like everything in DB had more weight to it. The first time the big bad threatened to destroy the planet (Piccolo, after destroying shenron) actually mattered to me. Also I was more interested in Goku aging than I ever was with Gohan. Gohan turned out to be a disappointment at the end of the series.

It knew when to be goofy, I can't really think of any moments where something comedic was shoved in the wrong place.
The Buu Saga was initially goofy but gave way to the darker plot. The driving episode was a fun and goofy episode which dived into the idea of what it would be like for these powerful warriors adjusting to day to day life.

There wasn't anything especially funny about early DB. It certainly isn't funny enough to justify a reread, so I usually skip those parts.

I rewatched DB recently and I enjoyed it more than DBZ. It's not hilarious comedy, but it's fun, has good action, nice characters, and it doesn't take itself too seriously.

As far as the anime goes, it also has much better pacing than DBZ.

Have you considered that Dragon Ball is just better? Not just as a statement to offset the status quo and the popularity Z has? Z was cool when I was a kid and preteen, I remember watching it early in the morning at like 6 am before school and on the weekend.

I recently marathoned both DB and DBZ and DB has more meaningful fights, the story is better paced and the training felt like it meant something and had a real character development.

In contrast, the pacing in Z was bad, like in the Freeza fight where those precious five minutes lasted for an hour. The training was a means to power up and vehicle to progress the story, the main exception to this was Gohan's training with Goku in the time chamber.

I get why people like Z more because it is more adrenaline pumping with bigger and escalating battles. But I enjoy the story of a boy in a magical world having adventures and making his way through the martial arts world as the world grows darker and more lethal as he is exposed more to the horrors of this world.

The term is loss of innocence.
When we are young everything is an adventure, when we are old everything is just stimuli.
DB and DBZ both replicate these points.
DB is just an innocent adventure, with slightly crude jokes pointed towards our innocence at not knowing what sex is, and having a few actually intense fight scenes (the final fight of the tournament for instance). Anyways DBZ is just ok well we are adults, still going on adventures, but you already know what life is by this point. Here are just fight scenes.

Nah. I watched DBZ from the ages of 5 to 9, and then watched DB when I was 10-11, and I enjoyed DB far more. I've since rewatched both, and I think I appreciate DB more than ever.
