I liked Kirito/Asuna, for once the heroine is the hero's equal and they have legitimate reasons to like each other...then the first arc ended, Asuna got locked in a cage and we focus on Kirito's sister lusting after him and the other haremettes.

S1 was fine, all around a decent "die in the game, die in real life" story with a good twist at the end. It's biggest failing is that it skimped on a bunch of exposition, world building, and character development.

S3 was mostly better than S1, and S4 was actually a legitimately good speculative fiction story.

S2 on the other hand was just shit with the sole highlight of letting the MC retain his badass stats because ALO is a cheap copy/paste job of SAO being a reasonably clever plot point. In the opening episodes it looked so promising, Kirito was an okay starting point for a character to develop from, Asuna was a decently strong main heroine, Klein and Agil looked like fun side characters and he part with Sachi's guild dying made for some solid character development potential for Kirito.

Then episode 5 aired and the harem and wish fulfillment sections of the series really start to kick in and everything goes down hill so fast.

If only the author had written the story out over all 100 floors, could have had the entire series be focused on that and never done ALO or any of that garbage.

If only the author hadn't introduced a bunch of new female characters that only exist to be pointlessly in love with Kirito for poorly explained reasons.

If only the author didn't go all gary stu on Kirito's character

If only the author didn't turn Asuna into a weak, pathetic, generic damsel in distress style love interest.

Fucking bummed me out, the show had real potential and just blew it in favour of dumb otaku pandering fanservice bullshit and lazy story telling.

Sword Art Online actually has a decent premise and in the first episode or two a really oppressive atmosphere.

The reason SAO is shit is not because of the premise, it's because it's filled with the most fucking cringy LN-tier writing and has every generic anime trope out the ass thrown into it.

I highly doubt any of this will translate to a western adaption. They will keep the concept and drop everything else.

If they have decent enough writers and showrunners, SAO could make a decent TV show.

I've actually been wondering for a long time how Western writers and showrunners would run with concepts and settings you won't find outside of anime. If this turns out decent, I wonder if we will start to see more western/anime crossovers going both directions (Western writers and show runners working on anime productions as well)

The the SAO: Progressive manga is actually pretty good, probably because it's a reboot. So it's possible that the movie in question could be decent as well.
