He properly realised it in episode 8 or 9, I think, but only now did he finally speak it all out to someone. He's kept pretending to be something he isn't, he's (poorly) played the role of this sociable goof, who's always there to help everyone and is never down. Pretending to be a hero and trying to amount to great deeds, yet failing continuously. The failures finally got to him, he suggested escaping and abandoning everything to Rem (which actually happens in a spin-off alternative universe and they live happily ever after) and once she refuses, he just collapses.
