2. The author basically pinned Emilia as the love interest, to then develop Rem and Subaru, to coma Ren after this for the DRAMA, to then develop Emilia again, to then create a romantic triangle, to then make Honda suffer even more because he hates him.

It's not so much the character's fault, but bad writing in setting things up. If he properly developed HondaxEmilia, would this scene have 1/10th of the impact. No, it would've been a foregone conclusion.
