Completely agree with you OP. Shirou's an absolute shit audience surrogate harem lead MC who cannot stand on his own. However for some reason if you criticize Shirou and the ridiculous plot point of the series tying mana recharge with sex (how convenient), Fatedrones will come up in swarms and accuse you of being filthy secondaries.

Shirou's an absolute shit self insert protagonist. He's why there's not a single good Fate anime with him in it, because he's an idiot beta who can't carry a series. Just compare him to Kiritsugu his dad who's his own character.

The VN format of Fate series hides this a little bit, by giving you an illusion of choice as the player, makes you relates to Shirou just like how you would relate to protagonist in real videogames just by the virtue of you exerting control over his action. This illusion of choice in VN ironically blinds a chunk of people who accuses anyone who criticizes Shirou as being secondaries.
