I've started learning Japanese, Spanish and Russian over the past 12 months but gave them all up within a few weeks (Japanese about 2 months) because I lacked motivation. I don't live in a country where it would be useful to know any language other than English, which is annoying but also makes it more difficult to practice because so few are bilingual. I'm frustrated with myself but I just feel too lazy to learn anything because I can't really see any point to it.

But then what. Why not learn japanese anyway. Yeah it is hard, but it seem better than learning other langauges when you can just learn the fucking source.

All you have to do is read any kind of written work and use context clues. Most of the time, simplified and traditional characters share the same particle, and in context, it doesn't take a genius to figure out what a certain unfamiliar character is.

Take 學漢字 compared to 学汉字. If a sentence goes 爱舔菊花的鬼佬想學漢字, You know it has to do with words because you should know what 字 means, and in context, it should click that 學 probably is 学 and 漢 is 汉 after you account for 爱舔菊花的鬼佬 and make some assumptions. Having a way to look characters up, as well as memorizing characters by particles rather than the character by itself is important too. Speaking comes naturally once you talk to enough people. I know literally everyone in Hong Kong can speak fluent English, so I guess that's why you're still struggling, but a little effort goes a long way.

French has a really wide choice in both official and fan translations.
Mangas are quite cheap (7€) and we often get official translations before Americans/English.
Also pronounciation is fairly easy for us since we just have to use "l" instead of "r" and we're good to go.

I use rutracker for rare films, it has more than any other public/semi-private tracker I know. Every seasons, there's literally no left out anime. For some popular shows, you'll have around 5 fansub team competing for "market share".
The fansubs are generally rated on typecasts (font, background texts, op/ed), speed ( within 5 hour on air ) , content ( accuracy, and some word choice to fit the atmosphere, neta explanation e.t.c), encoding and stuff.

Now they are in deep winter, bilibili (CR equivalent) made torrent less desirable. There are more cooperating between the fansubbers, generally they still covered all seasonal shows.

Conclusion, the chink sub are far more knowledgeable in /a/ stuff and far more professional than english subs.
