It's a common disease in Trunks' time, common enough that there's a cure for it. If it were from Yardrat, it couldn't happen because people didn't travel to space often enough. If it were a virus that spreads by proximity, Goku's family would have gotten it too, but they didn't. If it were Frieza's tail, then people couldn't have gotten it in the future.

My fan theory is that Dr. Gero engineered it to specifically target Saiyans because Goku and Vegeta were the only real threat to Cell at the time. If it killed humans, then Cell's bioenergy source would disappear and he wouldn’t be strong enough to absorb 17 and 18. Gohan and Trunks seemed resistant to it because of their half human biology. As for why Vegeta did not contract it I don't know. Dr. Gero was successful in at least defeating his biggest perceived enemy in the future timeline, Goku.

Trying to say the virus is from space just raises too many questions when compared to it simply being an Earthling Virus that Goku got. It would even explain why there was a delay in Goku getting the Virus in the present timeline. He simply didn't contract it yet.
