According to Nasu himself, "Even though sometimes he [Takeuchi] says impossible things, at the time the concept seemed simply ridiculous. Turning Saber into a girl, that'd completely destroy Fate! At first I was very against the idea, but after a while, I thought some of the difficulties that might arise could be resolved." And so work on Fate/stay night began.

Fate was not initially written as a game script, so the story had to be edited to add more game routes and plot, new setting changes, and so forth. Around a year after development began, the group began to realize that the capacity and scope of a doujin group severely limited what they could do with Fate. One of the most important factors was money. They had received help from other professionals during the making of Tsukihime, but that support was solely based on the pride of a game maker, and the group didn't want to always rely on others.

Faced with a difficult choice, TYPE-MOON decided to enter the commercial market in order to produce Fate commercially. Luckily, while TYPE-MOON's works are 18+ games, they aren't on the extreme end, so TYPE-MOON fared fairly well as a commercial company. Of course, the new company had to watch out for details, like not setting their games in high schools. Under Japanese law, 18+ games can't involve characters under the age of 18, so characters in the games are always students of "so-and-so University," not "so-and-so High School."

TYPE-MOON also considered the possibility of leaving the 18+ genre and heading straight to the console market, but the company saw the console market as too limiting, and continued making adult games.

Plot wasn't butchered. Characters and theme exploration were. Take the resolution to the Archer-Shirou fight.

VN: Shirou threw away the techniques absorbed from Archer and his attacks become skill-less swings, but hit harder than before, a metaphor for how he acknowledges he can't beat Archer/his ideals are impossible and he isn't trying to win anymore/achieve his ideal, rather his resolve is finally hardened by simply trying to fight/chase after his ideals. This is what made Archer threw the fight. There's even a transition in thought from "I don't want to be a superhero, I'm going to become one..!" to "He's right. I can't be a superhero".

Anime: J-pop riddled flashback with Shirou saying "no, ur wrong" and DBZ powering up his projections. He does super-skilled backflips and is able to deflect giant swords thrown at him afterwards, almost like if the theme was "fuck the impossible, you can do anything if try hard enough!!!!". It even takes place in UBW even though it makes no sense at all how Archer still has the mana to support it.

It's things like that which stops the VN from becoming generic battle shonen material, and the anime changes it into generic battle shonen material.

The shrinking of the anime industry happened gradually, westeners bought anime, japs figure that adding fanservice and merchandise based on it they can exploit otakus at the same time, westeners keep buying anime out of habit but don't enjoy it as much because of above, producers keep banking on both, westeners are eventually alienated and now they only have otakus, anime industry shrinks, quality drops considerably, digital, outsourcing and 3d out the ass, quality drops even more.

It's a vicious cycle and they have no one to blame but them, the last anime to reach "old" numbers in the west in terms of sales and exposure is fucking death note.

Is Type Moon making a mistake by adapting Heavens feel? I mean,it has very little Saber which is type moon's cash cow and the IIya fans are all watching Prisma and won't waste money to see her die. There's Rinfags but they'd rather see her be cute in Prisma and UBWs then bitchy in Heavens Feel. Archer also checks out early so there goes his fans as well. There's Kotomine but he doesn't do anything interesting until the climax of the route.

Nobody really likes Sakura and the few that do don't know of her actions in Heavens Feel. I feel like this is a waste of time and money. The fate route is trash and already animated so why not just go for that psuedo sequel game with Karen and Bazett? There's not even enough Rider in Heavens Feel for people to bother watching. HF is a meh story that's good if you have all the other background info and know the characters, so you can be surprised, feel sorry for Saber and Sakura, appreciate Kotomine, etc, and get the big picture.
