Kyoani moved toward making stuff that is more character driven and less plot driven. Which is good because they're way better at character. Their stories are always sort of a mess.

If you're a plot guy you don't like it and if you're a character guy you do. Either way it's the right move for Kyoani, because it plays to their strength while downplaying their weakness.
