Death Note or Code Geass
(I'd go with Geass)
How the fuck do they even compare?
One is a detective drama about the battle of wits between two geniuses, while the other is a action/mecha about a guy wanting to liberate the elevens from Brittania through large-scale wars and political schemes.

Because they're both about a teenager who accidentally gets magic abilities which he then uses to try and take over the world.
Death note
People say that second part sucked but r2 sucked even more and last episode didn't magically fixed this problem.

Code Geass is the greatest thing ever created across all forms of media.

Lelouch gains a magic ability. Light finds a magic book.
Lelouch wants to liberate the world from a tyrannical superpower. Light wants to play god.
You're a retard.

While Code Geass is "lighter" overall and has elements of other genres (like extensive action sequences), they both rely strongly on "expository chess game" narratives in which the characters narrate their thoughts and ideas while locked in a battle of wits and resources against other characters. Much of the time in both shows is devoted to this, although admittedly less, as Code Geass saves space for other conventions.
I think that many people would agree that if you're fascinated by the plot/ingenuity of one, you'd likely enjoy the other as well.
Let's be honest, Deathnote was actually quite a bit better than Geass

Death Note manga>Code Geass>Death Note anime

Code Geass kinda knows that it's absurd and it even feels as if it's parodying itself in certain points. Death Note starts off strong but then the plans get more and more ridiculous while the show asks the viewer to view it realistically while the most ridiculous plans in Code Geass are made fun of.
Light
>doesn't let petty things like family or friends get in the way of his goals
Lelouch
>abandons his entire fleet when he was so close to reaching his goal because muhh sister

death note was going uphill quality wise until episode 25. Shame it turned into shit afterwards cause of shit writting, could've worked so much better if we had some Light development as a character towards the end

Light wasn't the main problem with the second half of the story. It was Near and Mellow being unimaginative characters, and not having been foreshadowed at all in the first half.
Best ending in my opinion would have been L having designed some sort of intricate dead man's switch to kill off Light after L kicked the bucket.
L and Light were always equals, and should have had a tie ending.
Both are shit, Code Geass is at least an entertaining wild ride.

Try not to cut yourself with that edge.
First half of DeathNote was quality writing by any reasonable standard.
And truth be told, there were some redeemable aspects in the 2nd part, but it's overshadowed by the fact that the 1st half was just in a league of its own.

At least they're discussing two highly important anime of the past 10 years.
