Thinking about rewatching brotherhood, episode 1 aside, can I watch the first 24 or so episodes of 2003 and then hop into episode 13 of brotherhood or would that be a mess? I don't like how rushed the first season of brotherhood was.

Definitive version is the English Robotech novels, 1-6. Don't bother with anything else.

Im sorta on the same page, but everytime i think about it i cant say theres abything bad about it besides Al at the very end. Ed has a character arc, Hoenheim finally does something, they're re-united again, etc. most loose ends are pretty much tied.

In any case, I've tried watching Brotherhood 5 times now, totaling 8 episodes, and yes i did skip a few. Everytime I even watch 5 minutes of that show I'm completely reminded why I have not and probably will never be able to sit down and watch the Brotherhood-only content.

Funny you say this because it seemed to be the opposite to me. 2003 had too much melodramatic bullshit that served no narrative purpose other than to get a response out of you. Ed was annoying in how he'd always take one step and ten steps back, also the constant angst got annoying as well. It also didn't tie up its loose ends that's why it needed a movie.

'03 actually tried to develop the Homunculi beyond being a generic quirky villain group. But Dante was shit, Winry's character arc with Ed is thrown out midway through, and Al becomes borderline unlikeable when he and Ed encounter Sloth. Also Shamballa was underwhelming.

Brotherhood (and the manga) completely shits the bed early on by making Mustang too powerful and then conveniently blinds him before the climax in an attempt to keep some suspense. It's first season feels like a clip show of scenes from the manga which ruins the impact of Huges death. But most of the main cast get better development and it has a more balanced tone.

Let's get sth straight: Brotherhood ends with gen. Grumman becomes a Fuhrer, wars with Creta and Aerugo still goin, making the whole demilitarisation (and demobilisation of state alchemists) crap immpossible, Mustang exiled from central to the east (which is considered the crappiest region of them all) and Edward become unemployed teenager, whose artificial leg makin him puke out of pain every time the weather changes.
But yeah, this sound much too optimistic for a teenage show.

I just rewatched this last week. Literally nothing good happens to Al at all. He gets fucked up twice, then he's convinced he's not real, then someone gets murdered inside him. Then he nearly melts to death. When he finally decides it's not worth it and sacrifices himself, Ed fucks that up for him too.

Even though Scar dies, he becomes way too important to the central plot.

Dante & the Homunculi "It was my plan all along!" is hardly good writing.

And those last two episodes are nearly Evangelion-tier. The idea that there's another world on the other side of the gate isn't bad on its own, but giving Ed and Hohenheim a free pass because "there's someone like you on the other side" is just too convenient; not to mention it kind of shits on the logic of everything about human transmutation.

I liked it, but it wasn't the manga.
I never bothered to watch Brotherhood, but if it has good production values and follows the original story, it should be better.

I rewatched the original FMA and it wasn't as good as I remembered. At least it was different though, the ending was a bit darker. And the movie was cool imo, I much preferred it to the manga ending.

Still, if you watched it again today you might not like it as much as you did.

Sailor moon? The '92-7 anime is all filler, but is still pretty great, while the manga just feels half-assed. Soundtrack is comfy as fuck too , which helps.

It isn't nostalgia, I just liked the darker atmosphere that it had over Brotherhood. The reveal that it was our world's wars that gave them alchemic power was really ass though.

Manga > Brotherhood. Brotherhood ruined a lot, even shat on some parts in some cases.

FMA 03 had the best OST and how they showed Ed and Al's human transmutation was much more effective. But it also got melodramatic, Winry was even more annoying, and Shamballa's ending felt too soon.

I don't really rank them in a straightforward way, it just doesn't work.

What do all these shows have in common? They deviated from the source material at points to do their own thing. I'd take a hundred shows that deviate from the source material to experiment even if only ten are good, compared to 100 shows that stick as rigidly as close to the source as possible for fear of upsetting autistic otaku.

Probably. It put me off on watching Brotherhood for a long time, I finally started watching it the other day and it's not as bad as I thought it would be. It kills the mood in some parts but I've also laughed at a few other parts.
