The A7s extract hydrocarbons from regular human food and water and use them to power a fuel cell.
Alpha was a A7M2 preproduction model, her bioreactor cannot extract hydrocarbons from animal fat, so she gets "sick" when she tries to drink milk, and gets silly when she drinks alcohol because it contains so much raw fuel that she gets excessive charge.
She drinks lots of liquids because water is needed for both stages of the fuel production process and also to keep her cool.

You don't see any of the A2-A6 series androids in YKK because they are all dead. They were all dependent on the power grid and internet for charging and regular software updates and debugging. Those networks have fallen apart, so private owners could not maintain them. Also the economic crash after the first great tide dislocated shipping resulted in the androids jobs going back to unemployed humans who were just trying to feed their families. A large number of androids, including apparently all the "male" bodied ones, that were still running were collected by the government and expended in efforts to try to reclaim inundated ports and reestablish shipping traffic.
There were only c. 20 A7 types made. Their small number and high level of humanness allowed them to escape public notice. As they appeared just as the economic crisis hit the company that built them went bankrupt. Alpha and the one male A7, Nai, were apparently taken home by staffers who worked on the project. Kokone was apparently one of the few purchased by a family, Maruko on the other hand seems to have been just turned loose on the streets when the factory closed down.

Director Alpha was so life like that the rest of the 7 series were given not humanly possible hair and eye color combinations so they could be told apart from humans.
When Director Alpha lived with Sensei's family when Sensei was in late grade school or jr high age, she had auburn hair and green eyes and passed as a Caucasian woman in her late teens or early twenties. Her attempts to learn human interaction had the outward appearance of a foreign exchange student trying to grapple with Japanese language and culture.
It also became clear that the A7s were TOO human. The next generation of A7s were deliberately dummed down in order to make them sellable. Both Hatsuseno-san and Sensei had seen Director Alpha "grow up" and realized that if they lived long enough the A7s learning software would eventually work around the attempts to retard them.
When they show Alpha's flashback to the day Hatsuseno san gave her her first uniform. Alpha doesn't really say anything, she just giggles. The first time I read it I thought it was just extreme happiness. But on the second read through I realized that while she was happy, she also was at that time still operating with the intelligence of a grade schooler. The retarded giggle was because she WAS retarded. But the more she interacted with humans and the more she read, the more jobs she undertook and solved for herself she became more and more like an adult human.

Its 99.9 percent certain that the A7s doo pee and poop. They have to clean out their system periodically of food products they were not able to burn for power. They are not shown talking about it, much less actually shown using the bathroom. Whether the A7s have an onnahole is another matter. This there was a conversation about between Alpha and Nai and the answer was-ambiguous.

I suppose they could survive on just alcoholic beverages, if their software could control the overcharge better than Alpha's A2 version could. Alpha cannot handle the protein left behind in animal products, it just clogs up her system until she drinks enough fluids to wash it out. Usually puts her down for a day.
The time she tried Kahlua coffee was hilarious. The rapid fluctuation between fuel starvation and fuel overcharge between the cream clogging her fuel supply and then the alcohol hitting resulted in her waking up on ojisans doorstep the next morning with no memory of how she got there.
