Why are colors so oversaturated now?

I've actually heard US animators talk about this before, and the reason at the time was the switch to Plasma TVs. They had an issue with subtle colors and "true" black shading, so a lot of animation switched to a more saturated look.

Thanks, this has been bugging the shit out of me for a while. I don't necesarily mind it, but sometimes I really wish shows could be more muted with their color palettes.
>>144803477
Maybe you mean LCD TVs? Plasma does blacks better IIRC
Because you don't need to buy paints for digital anime, you can have whatever colours you like.

Good BD remasters of old anime don't look as washed-out as tape or DVD versions.

Yes, that's it. I got mixed up on that.

I still feel like there's a noticeable difference with shows from the last ~10 years. I have a feeling it's a combination of >>144803564 and >>144803626.
>>144803386
Actually, limitations of cel animation made the colours under-saturated.
>>144803386
But the colors are more saturated in the older image here...
>>144803869
Really? I wouldn't exactly be surprised. It's a relatively minor gripe, all things considered.

I'm probably using the wrong terminology, but I'm still aware of a difference in coloring. I guess it's just a more limited color palette then?
There's a number of factors.
I think one of the main ones is that the telecine conversion from film to videotape always dullens the colors, as you can see from most HD remasters which bypass the telecine process.

Its normal for colors to look darker when its a scene inside where theres only a couple dim light sources. Different shows also can have an emphasis on different lightings and color palletes anyway. There are still shows with bright poppy colors (or mb ugly and washed out ones like the shitty screenshot you got from google images)
