All trendy memeing aside, NGE was kind of a bloated and underwhelming anime.

Characters had, at best, some really spongebob squarepants style character development which can really just be summed up as "muh daddy issues - I is big boy now papi?"

There was the potential for an interesting backdrop with the whole Eva/Adam/etc. thing. But, turns out, they just added that imagery cuz it "looked cool" and never intended to add substance to it.

Plus the waifus suck.

I really don't understand why the ending confuses anybody. I thought it was pretty straightforward with its themes and intentions to the point of being a little redundant.

I first watched it years ago on a friend's recommendation without knowing it was supposed to be controversial. I can understand why it must've been surprising at the time, but it's really not that obfuscated, all the elements in the ending were present throughout the entire show. I don't get how people can still meme it being nonsense, it was hamfisted if anything

Allow me to blow your mind: Kaworu is Rei II's son.

In Ep.23, Rei II is literally penetrated by Armisael (Angel of the Womb), she blushes and starts writhing in pleasure, not agony. Later, Rei decides to absorb Armisael into herself to save Shinji, and EVA-00 takes on a distended belly that looks practically like a pregnancy. If you look carefully at Rei, she also has a huge pregnant belly. Before Rei self destruct EVA-00, everything fuses into a single entity, which looks a lot like Giant Naked Rei from EoE. This is not just a coincidence.

When Armisael and Rei are talking, a huge structure of flesh grows out of EVA-00, the Angel Tower, and it contains the shapes of ALL the angels so far (the sons of adam). This symbolizes that all angels are now inside her. This is what Rei absorbs into her body. Rei is gestating Kowaru. But that isn't all there is to this...

Armisael and Rei have a conversation in which she realizes she loves and desires Shinji. And when Shinji appears, Armisael wants to understand that feeling and goes after Shinji. Shinji captures it in his hands (reminder that Shinji's hands symbolize his power/powerlessness, they are his freudian phalus) and Armisael begins fusing with him too. Rei, who is now connected to Shinji, say "Is this my mind and soul wanting to become one with Ikari?". Shinji is Kaworu's father.

Rei has light blue hair. Shinji has dark brown hair. Light blue and dark brown are complementary colors, which means when you mix them 50-50 you end up with neutral gray. Kaworu has gray hair.

Rei has bright red eyes. Shinji has dark blue eyes (yes, they are dark blue). Mix bright red with dark blue and you get maroon. Kaworu has maroon eyes.

When does Kaworu appear for the first time? The very next episode.

It's one of those series where I slowly lose interest because even though it's beautifully executed, I have less and less interest in what's happening. People call it "high-minded" to avoid having to answer for the fact that the plot gets convoluted as the writers explore deeper up their own asses.

If NGE+EoE is a 4/10 plot, then what is a 10/10?
EVA's plot is nothing more complicated of stuff like Utena, Lain or Paranoia Agent.
A plot doesn't need to be spelled in every single detail, directors don't have to assume viewers are dumb.
Have you read even for a little the evageeks wiki? It makes things way more clear.
The plot of NGE is honestly better than 80% of the series I've watched, and the lore is immense.
