It started out pretty good, but devolved into shit once Biba was introduced. Also, there weren't enough female characters and they weren't sexualized enough for /a/ to give a fuck.

People were expecting the show to derail, but it stayed on track. Then, to everyone's amazement, it followed the tracks underwater and came to a clean stop, dumping its now-drowned passengers at a submerged train station.

Was fine up until Biba came into the picture. Action and animation was great but the plot and character progression (non-existent) was fucking dumb. I mean seriously, the Shogun doesn't send back up for a battle (for maybe even a good reason, it was never even explained) and Biba decides to kill nearly everyone in his way to get revenge on his daddy. He even releases kabanari on innocents which doesn't even factor into killing his dad. I don't know how its a happy ending just because they killed Biba, there are still fucking kabanari out there and the strongest city in terms of defense was DESTROYED. Showing them riding off into the sunset on a fucking train was one of the biggest ending cop outs Ive ever seen. I hope this show goes down in history for its horrible writing.

I think it was closer to something like sword of the stranger then anything. I feel like its only failing was that if the story was longer the journey might have been more interesting if they had more time. Otherwise it was just a dumb zombie steampunk samurai feudal series with a good amount of heart over before it started. I wouldn't mind a sequel.

It was one of two Aniplex stealth marketed big dumb hype pay attention to me so we can advertise some music and shore up otaku viewership for noitaminA shit shows (this one with Sawano music for extra baiting of dumb anime fans into watching it) of the season along with Haifuri. It went through it's motions of initial promise and pretense of functionality and then crushing salty disappointment as it all inevitably collapsed under the weight of having to serve too many disparate and often competing commercial interests and now it's over. Rinse/repeat this season with things like Thunderbolt Fantasy where the main conceit is yet another show written by Urobuchi and scored by Sawano to follow in the footsteps of Aldnoah but meant to shore up viewership for Pili and sell some dolls for Good Smile Company.

There really is no discussion left to be had over this show. Absolutely none whatsoever other than maybe the readily observable rapid rise and decline of Wit Studio. I mean we'll get another show just like it soon enough, possibly out of that new EGG FIRM producer that looks like it wants to be the next Aniplex by affiliating itself with Japan's "top creators" which according to it's propaganda founding announcement are people like Akiyuki Shinbo, Ichiro Okouchi and Kawahara Reki. If not them then the next Wit Studio show for sure. Frankly I'm glad that Wit split off from I.G to become it's own thing because I don't want their obviously wholly commercially interests being too closely associated with I.G who are actually capable of putting a good show once in a while. They clearly have different goals in mind from the rest of I.G Port as far back as Guilty Crown so they needed to be their own entity. Hell I'd even rate Xebec above Wit in terms of overall average quality of recent shows after an unfortunate dose of Owari no Seraph, Kabaneri and that dreadful Star Fox CGI thing. The latest Fafner season was fantastic.

I think they have among the better 2d animators out there, but that's hardly surprising since a lot of them have been in the business since the days of cell animation. I think their planning and strategy for the kinds of shows they put out have historically been about as hit or miss (mostly miss) as any other producer in the business. I haven't watched more than a few episodes of one of their shows in years though since I stopped being interested in light novel stuff and producers that focus on adapting or affiliating themselves with that sort of material so I'm more indifferent to them than anything. You know unlike the rest of /a/ who are borderline obsessed with trying to force memes about the studio and would probably stalk the shit out of them if they were an anthropomorphic entity. In fact the only reason we're even having this exchange is you insisted on bringing them up virtually out of nowhere.

It would have been better if they had just presented it as a monster of the week show. The story they apparently wanted to tell and the setting they seemingly wanted to show needed more episodes than the 12 they got, with the result that most of the plot points that were raised, with the exception of Biba, were left unexplored or not concluded.
