However you cut it, they were friends and only just friends.

I wonder if with Mononofu being axed the scanlation will pick up or die.
To be honest I really liked it, but I knew it was doomed since it is a well know fact that SJ readers have shit taste and its ranking was constantly very low.
That said, I think its real weak point regarding to longevity was its protagonist: how can you write a long story on shougi with a character that is extremely strong at endgame? There's not a whole lot of interesting matches you can write from that premise, imho. It can sorta work in actual sports manga, but if it had a long serializations, it probably would have had to focus on other characters way more than MC to keep the interest going (heck, it probably already was doing it).
