While it was crappy that Avdol died for him against Vanilla Ice, that really wasn't Polnareff's fault. It was only Avdol seeing that message that warned him, Iggy and Pol had no possible way of knowing that an invisible, intangible enemy was approaching them from behind.

While Polnareff was often silly and easily manipulated, he was also pretty tough. He's easily got the most kills/wins after Jotaro in SDC, and when shit gets real he's just as cunning as the others, thinking of things like shattering the mirror to kill Devo, hiding from Alessi, etc. And he actively grew as a strategist and person over the course of the story, too.

There was a reason DIO was so eager to hire him again, in spite of all the trouble he caused. He knew quality when he saw it.

It grabbed me harder than nearly any of the other parts did, seeing all these different people with different motives going through the first part of the race caught my attention. The middle section drags on a bit with some of the fights but it picks up in the last half / third with the most batshit and consistently overpowered/world-altering Stands in the series. You might dislike the ending at first since it's a bit much to grasp the first time round but give it a bit and listen to some people explaining it properly (Araki had to rush the final volume because the editors wanted it wrapped up and done in under 160 chapters but Araki apparently wanted SO to be over 200 chapters long) and it'll become obvious that it's actually a really good ending that fits perfectly and isn't a happy ending nor a bad one, it's bitterseet in all the right ways. Enjoy, and Jolyne/Pucci are fucking lit as fuck, most detractors of Part 6 admit that the main protagonist and antagonist are probably the best thing about SO.

It ditched all it's own powers as it started to become DIO's vision of a perfect Stand, the turning inside out was just one application of the inverse gravity surrounding Pucci. It was less their Stands making a new Stand and the Green Baby turning Whitesnake into something completely different over time. Like Whitesnake and MiH are supposed to be entirely different, not just an upgraded form of the other, making C-Moon a weird gangly clusterfuck of being halfway converted. If ANYONE did the ritual instead of Pucci they'd still end up with Made in Heaven exactly as it was, they'd just have a different intermediate stage of evolution.

It's part of the shit translations, in the original Japanese Requiem is described less as a power up and more that there's some presence in the Arrow that possesses the Stand for a time. They don't go too in depth into it but it's got some weird eldritch stuff going on with it which very loosely ties into the alien origin of the Arrows (never outright stated but very loosely implied). It seems rather sadistic in nature as well, since when Polnareff died it still had the goal of protecting the Arrow but it no longer was bound to a user so it started to do more fucked things like planting alien souls in people's bodies and shit. Giorno wants Requiem to make Diavolo stop when he uses it, so it interprets that as 'make him die forever' which wasn't what Giorno wanted. He's terrified of what it can do. We see GER telling Diavolo that Giorno doesn't know what it's actually capable of and whenever Giorno is listening GER just acts like a regular Stand and pretends not to hear him, though Giorno caught onto his shit. It's a shame it was never elaborated on since Requiem seems like an asshole and the Beetle Arrow is the one DIO and Pucci used to awaken their Stands and thus the Joestar Stands and Weather Report as well, which makes it a very powerful Arrow.

As for the Beetle Arrow itself there are 6 Arrows and 5 are identical with only the Beetle Arrow standing out. Diavolo wanted this one specifically since he discovered Requiem when Polnareff accidentally pricked himself with it like a few years before VA even starts. It's implied heavily that Requiem only happens with the Beetle Arrow and there's a fan theory that it also makes the strongest Stand since it created The World, Whitesnake, Weather Report and all the Joestar Stands.

He becomes a comic relief in Part 3 and does almost nothing relevant to the plot. And then he's just a senile old man in Part 4.
