Fate/stay night is a beautiful exercise in the emotional craft of storytelling. It isn't a story about mythological heroes going at war. It's a story about the importance of what heroes represent, and fighting for those ideals. Tightly plotted, thematically consistent, emotionally affecting, and incredibly layered. There's so much more to Fate/stay night than there may seem to be at first glance

The anime simultaneously questions the metamorphosis of human ideals, man's quest for heroism, etc.
There are thousands of themes seamlessly woven together. Idealism vs Utilitarianism, the importance of hope in the face of adversity, wishes as an inherently selfish act, cultural expectations of good and evil, the contradictory nature of child heroes, redemption, and a whole bunch mythic revisionism and allegory to top it all off.
Don't get me started on the anime itself, every frame tells a second, sometimes even third narrative underneath the first. I think it's statement to its greatness.

Nasu crafted not a game, not a "story", but a universe. It's every bit as detailed, every bit as supple and responsive as ours. It's a moving Sistine Chapel ceiling.

Fate/stay night takes the set of ideals a lot of fictional stories just run with and says - "but the real world does not work that way" - setting up an indepth exploration on what could motivate person to pursue such a path, thereby deconstructing the idea of heroism and pragmatism and the idea of selfless actions for selfish reasons (namely the idea that the fulfillment of "saving people" can only come from people actually being in peril).

Anyway Nasu is the master of poetry if you watch the UBW anime there is many poetry going on but I highly advise to read the VN for better experience

The VN is a really interesting variant of the bildungsroman IMO... the part that could stand alone as a classic bildungsroman is unlimited blade works, which I guess is why they picked it to be The Good Anime which gives nasu's final word about the heroic story of emiya shirou, but I think of both Fate and Heaven's Feel as being adjacent to the unlimited blade works story in an important way. They show different stages of a man's psychosocial development.

Also in general I feel like Nasu holds his particular neuroses very close to the surface in his works, which is charming. Shirou is fucked up, Saber is fucked up, Rin is also kind of a bundle of nerves; Gil and the others are just blatantly pathological

It's shit. Useless philosophy (redundant, I know) with no impact on the real world or actual human principles, awfully autistic characters, world contradicts its own rules for the sake of plot and throws Deus Ex Machina galore with the excuse of Luck stat or some shit, the sex scenes are awful, the lore is lazy as fuck and just merely mixes heroes without link whatsoever for maximum chuuni faggotry. But the worst is that if the VN actually portrayed good war battle and warfare, it would be enjoyable. But it's nothing but "psychological" shit to give the readers the feeling they're clever between the kitchen scenes that make up 70% of the VN for maximum waifufaggotry.

I'm thinking starting the Fate VN after finishing just finishing Tsukihime and Kagetsu Tohya. I heard it's good, but how bad are the shoehorned sex scenes? I remember some came out of left field in Tsukihime, like Shiki was going to sleep or some shit and suddenly Len is jerking him off. I'll excuse it there's atleast a halfway decent reason for the sex.

So just finished FSN and it was kind of a chore.

I'll even grant the excuse plot that Saber needs to slurp Shirou's semen for magicc reason, but how she fell for him for real is just stupid. For some reason I'm never been able to self insert, as you supposed to do to a generic nice guy protagonist with hero complex like Shirou, or the Persona protagonists, or whoever recent everyday protagonists like Bell, or Kirito, or that guy from Shimonetta. I find Shirou to be utterly obnoxious and grating on the nerve.

Anyway I heard UBW and HF have better Shirous is it true? Also I know that canon waifu for UBW is Rin and HF is Sakura, who did Saber ends up with in both route? This is important for my enjoyment

Interesting spins or takes on famous mythologies, very interesting world design in terms of how detailed the magic systems are, which also leads to cool fights. Some of the character arcs/conflicts can really stick out and speak to you, though that obviously comes down to personal preference.

Also, reading Nasu's other works shows an even larger multiverse, with countless epic tales and life-defying moments. Most of which witnessed by none, and all of them eventually forgotten. Whatever world they are in, will wither and decay against the test of time. Ultimately, meaningless in the grand wheel of destiny.

The franchise isn't about heroes. It's about humans. Your entire analysis fails to address the fact that heroes do not battle in isolation; definitionally there are more humans than heroes in the narrative and the arc of every hero is to implicate their own humanity in their circumstance.

You're so focused on heroic Arthur and heroic Hercules that you completely missed the actual content. The central conceit of F/SN is in fact Shirou and Rin and Sakura and Illya wrestling with "What makes a person a hero?" and "What does a true hero desire?". This is precisely what you bemoan as the great untapped potential of the franchise.

All the myths are window dressing because they are static. Everyone knows Arthur and Hercules. The dynamism in the narrative results from using the myth to illuminate the present. Which is entirely the purpose of mythmaking.
